A dated detached property, reworked around the needs of the people who live there.

The project involved a complete overhaul of the layout, a two-storey extension, loft conversion and new external cladding — a substantial transformation, but one that started with getting the brief right.

Taking the time to understand how our clients wanted to use the space, and what mattered to them day to day, helped shape the design from the outset.

As the clients put it: “The design was spot on from the start.”...and that's always great to hear!

Modern Heart for a 150 year old home - Before : After

This 150-year-old cottage had a cosy layout and traditional proportions, but they didn’t quite lend themselves to the social hub this much-loved family home needed.

The new addition connects the original cottage and former garage to create a generous kitchen and dining space, additional shower room, as well as a welcoming new entrance and light-filled setting for family life and entertaining.

By understanding how the family live and what they wanted from the build, we were able to carefully rethink how the spaces connect and flow. The result is a home that feels spacious, welcoming and perfectly suited to the way the family lives today.

And there’s more to come... We’ll be sharing the full case study soon, with video and full gallery to showcase this bright new space and hear how it's impacted family life.

Planning approval secured!

Planning isn't always a straight line, but the best outcomes often come from listening, collaborating and responding to feedback.

For this project, we secured planning approval for significant extensions and alterations after refining the proposals and providing a robust Planning Statement and Heritage Statement to demonstrate how the design would respect the neighbouring listed building while delivering the additional space our clients needed.

With Ground floor rear/side extensions and first floor rear extension, as well as creating a new front access, It's set to be quite a transformation and is a great example of how a collaborative, considered approach can overcome planning challenges and achieve a successful outcome

Every project is different, but taking the time to understand the planning context, address concerns and present a well-justified case can make all the difference.

Every home has its own story, and every project starts with understanding how our clients want to live.

For this rural property, we secured planning permission for a substantial two-storey addition—effectively doubling the footprint of the original cottage—alongside a contemporary kitchen extension that better connects the existing home to its generous setting.

Projects like this are about more than adding space — they’re about understanding how a home needs to evolve, and helping make that transition a positive one.

Could your home work better without building bigger?

You've decided you need more space… so an extension is the answer. Or is it?

It's often the first solution homeowners think of, but before designing an extension, it's worth asking another question...

Could your existing home work harder?

An early site visit allows us to look beyond the floor plan. We consider how your home is used, how natural light moves through the spaces, how it connects to the garden, and the opportunities and constraints of the site. This helps us explore solutions that go beyond simply adding more floor area.

Before developing a design, we take the time to understand what you want your home to deliver—creating spaces that are tailored to the way you live, both now and in the future.

Sometimes the answer is an extension. Sometimes it's a clever reconfiguration of the existing layout. Often, it's a combination of both.

Before we think about adding to a property, we take the time to understand it...

How do you extend a home that's already been transformed?

When a project evolves, it's important that every new addition feels like it was always meant to be there.

Following the renovation and conversion of this beautiful barn by our sister company, Swann Edwards Architecture Ltd , the clients returned with plans to expand the property with a pool house, garages, a gym and guest accommodation.

Working collaboratively, Swann Edwards Architecture and SE Addition developed a design that complements the character of the renovated barn while continuing contemporary spaces tailored to modern living, with a natural flow between the old and new spaces.

A carefully selected palette of materials helps to connect old and new, continuing the story of the original conversion. Exposed natural textures sit alongside refined, high-quality finishes, creating spaces that feel both timeless and contemporary.

The result is an extension that enhances the existing home without competing with it—adding space, function and character in equal measure.

Do you need planning permission for your home extension?

It's one of the questions we're asked most often—and the answer isn't always straightforward.

We've put together a simple step-by-step flow chart to help you understand whether your proposed extension is likely to require planning permission or if it could fall under Permitted Development.

👉 Click on the post and swipe through the slides to follow the process.

Remember, even if your project doesn't need planning permission, it may still require Building Regulations approval to ensure it's safe, compliant and built to the correct standards.

If you're still unsure where your project sits, we're here to help. We offer a free initial consultation to discuss your plans and explain exactly what approvals you'll need before you get started.

Why is roof glazing one of the most powerful tools in a loft conversion?

By bringing natural light in from above, it can transform even the most challenging roof spaces, helping them feel brighter, more open and better connected to the outdoors.

Roof glazing also serves as a focal point within the room, transforming the sloping roof from a constraint into one of the space's defining architectural features.

In this project, floor-to-ceiling glazing follows the slope of the roof, flooding the room with daylight while framing views of the sky. The result is a space that feels significantly larger, lighter and more inviting than its footprint alone might suggest.

When carefully considered, roof glazing can do far more than introduce natural light—it can enhance the sense of volume, improve the quality of a space and create a striking architectural feature.

What does sustainable design look like beyond the buildings we create?

For us, it's also about supporting initiatives that make a lasting environmental impact.

Since partnering with JUST ONE Tree, our contributions across the Collective have enabled more than 880 trees to be planted through global reforestation projects that help restore ecosystems, capture carbon and support local communities.

Alongside our ongoing commitment to sustainable architecture, we continue to donate the equivalent of 40 trees every month through this partnership.

Because creating a better future means thinking beyond the boundaries of the built environment - Growing forests. Regenerating oceans. Educating future generations. JUST ONE Tree at a time.
