Your Rhododendrons and Camellias might look like they are just resting, but they are secretly building next year’s flower buds right inside the stems!

If they dry out now, those tiny buds can drop off before they ever get a chance to open next spring.

Give them a deep, thorough soak at the roots once a week if the weather is dry.

Use collected rainwater if you can! Tap water can be too alkaline for these acid-loving plants and can hurt their blooms over time.

How do you make a small, narrow garden feel bigger?

It’s all about the layout.

For this garden, I removed the large shed and replaced it with a smaller one that still provided plenty of storage.

The decking was also shortened, which immediately made the garden feel wider. Artificial grass was removed and replaced with gravel, with a gentle curved path to soften the long, narrow shape.

A mirror adds perspective, while simple green and white planting, climbers and touches of black keep the scheme calm, contemporary and low maintenance.

A small garden doesn’t have to feel small.

Run dont walk.... have an amazing selection of spring bulbs — tulips, alliums, crocuses and so much more, Literally everything you could possibly wish for.

And if you’re clever about what you buy, you can create a bulb lasagne — layering bulbs that flower at different times — so you could have something flowering from February right through to May.
And at these prices, you can definitely afford to buy a few!

Late summer is one of the most exciting times in the garden.

I’ve just been to one of my favourite gardens, and, it’s looking beautiful right now.

This isn’t a garden that I originally designed — I’ve worked with what was already here, adding layers of planting and introducing colour and interest that carries the garden right through the seasons.

And this is exactly what I love about garden design.

You don’t always need to start from scratch.

Sometimes, the best gardens evolve over time — working with what you have, enhancing what’s already working and adding the right plants in the right place.

If you’re thinking about giving your garden a refresh, adding more colour or simply making better use of the space you already have, I’d love to hear from you.

Isn’t it crazy to think that all of this can come from one tiny little seed?

You plant something so small, watch it slowly emerge, and before you know it you’ve got this enormous sunflower bringing so much joy to everyone who walks past.

And then, just when you think it’s done, you can collect the seeds and start the whole thing all over again.

The perfect time to harvest is when the flower has finished blooming and the seeds have started to dry — usually towards the end of summer. Save some for next year and you can plant them again in spring, once the risk of frost has passed.

Nature really is rather wonderful

Hydrangeas are one of the most rewarding shrubs you can grow, but getting the right spot is key.

💗 Pink hydrangeas can turn purple or blue depending on your soil.

💙 Blue hydrangeas need acidic (ericaceous) soil to keep their vibrant colour.

🤍 White hydrangeas usually stay white regardless of soil conditions.
They thrive in partial shade or dappled shade, where their blooms last longer and their leaves are protected from scorching in hot sun.

A little knowledge goes a long way with hydrangeas – choose the right location and they'll reward you with months of beautiful flowers.
