Hydrangeas are one of the most rewarding shrubs you can grow, but getting the right spot is key.

💗 Pink hydrangeas can turn purple or blue depending on your soil.

💙 Blue hydrangeas need acidic (ericaceous) soil to keep their vibrant colour.

🤍 White hydrangeas usually stay white regardless of soil conditions.
They thrive in partial shade or dappled shade, where their blooms last longer and their leaves are protected from scorching in hot sun.

A little knowledge goes a long way with hydrangeas – choose the right location and they'll reward you with months of beautiful flowers.

Hori Hori knife

Possibly one of the hardest working tools in the garden. Perfect for digging, planting, dividing perennials, cutting through roots and getting weeds out properly without disturbing everything around them.

Mine is a Niwaki hori hori and although they’re about £35, it’s honestly one of the best bits of kit I have ever bought. One of those tools you end up reaching for every single time you’re in the garden

Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive, it just takes a little patience.

I grew this rose from a single cutting a year ago. All you do is take several rose cuttings, strip the leaves, dip the stems into rooting powder and push them into pots of soil. Not every cutting will take, but if you do enough, one usually will. Then it’s simply a case of waiting for the roots to develop and watching it grow into a beautiful healthy rose completely for free.

The erigeron was only £4 and it just keeps giving. If you cut it back hard, it comes back even better, and I’ve been amazed by how beautiful mine is this year. It flowers from April right through to October or November and self-seeds everywhere, so you can end up with even more plants over time. It’s honestly one of my absolute favourite garden plants.

The Chelsea Chop

If your late summer perennials always end up huge, floppy, and flowering all at once… this is for you.

The Chelsea Chop is basically giving certain plants a haircut in late May — around the time of the Chelsea Flower Show.

By cutting some stems back by about a third to a half, you get

*bushier plants
*less flopping
•*flowers for longer
• and often more blooms overall

Perfect for plants like:
sedums
phlox
asters
heleniums
rudbeckias

You can cut the whole plant back, or just half the stems if you want flowers at different times.
Honestly one of the easiest garden tricks for a fuller-looking border later in summer.

I Spotted some beautiful trailing geraniums in Lidl — £4.99 for six really quite large plants, which is such a bargain. They also had upright geranium packs, plus the cutest little fig trees, lemon trees and orange trees for £9.99. Perfect if you want to add a bit of Mediterranean feel to your garden or patio without spending a fortune.

One of my favourite May colour combinations

The apricot tones of Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ against the cool purples and blues of ‘Black Barlow’ aquilegias, allium ‘Purple Sensation’ and geranium ‘Roxanne’.

Using opposite tones on the colour wheel is one of the easiest ways to create depth, contrast and that soft luminous feeling in a garden.
