Here's a recent pressure washer job. Coastal air, rain and everyday grime can soon dull a patio/drive, but a proper clean makes a huge difference.

I was really pleased with how these slabs came back to life.

January Garden Jobs in Weymouth

I have been scouring the internet and researching things to do in a coastal garden in the winter but especially in January.

I asked ChatGPT to help me collate these tips together, hopefully it can provide some winter inspiration for you too.

Please let me know if you would like any help with these suggestions in your garden this month.

I have some slots available from Tuesday 13th January.

Here’s what ChatGPT suggested (I have to let you know this was collated with help from AI 😊):

January can feel quiet in the garden, but it’s actually one of the most useful months of the year. With Dorset’s cool, wet weather and short days, it’s all about gentle care and smart planning.

Lawn care

Clear fallen leaves and debris so grass doesn’t rot. Avoid walking on wet (or frozen) lawns as this can compact the soil and cause damage later.

Pruning and plant care

Many trees and shrubs are dormant now, making it a good time for light pruning. Apples, pears and roses are fine, but avoid spring-flowering shrubs or you’ll lose this year’s blooms.

Borders and beds

Top up mulch to protect roots and improve soil. January is also ideal for planting bare-root hedging and shrubs before growth starts.

Wildlife support

Birds and hedgehogs need help in winter. Keep feeders topped up, leave fresh water out, and consider a small log pile or hedgehog shelter.

Seed sowing (indoors)

You can start sweet peas and broad beans under cover now. Slow, cool growth makes stronger plants. Grow seeds indoors or in a greenhouse until Spring after the final frost.

Plan for the year ahead

Take a walk around your garden and note what worked last year and what didn’t. Winter shows you where structure or colour is missing.

January might be quiet, but the work you do now pays off come spring. If you’d like help getting your garden ready for the year ahead, feel free to get in touch.

Put off a job digging out 4 Box shrubs yesterday due to rain forecast (it didn’t rain 🙄) and scheduled for this morning with a sunny forecast, but it rained! 😆

All done though, embracing the rain, I think it went well. Forgot to do before photos, but here’s the evidence after.
