What could commercial solar do for your energy bills? ā˜€ļø

A recent UK solar discussion caught our attention.

One large property owner reported:
ā˜€ļø 72 solar panels
šŸ”‹ ~30 kWh battery storage
⚔ Previous electricity bills of ~£1,000/month
šŸ’· Claimed summer export payments of ~Ā£600/month

It's an unusually large domestic system, but there's a useful lesson for businesses.

For sites with high daytime electricity demand, the right solar and battery system can turn unused roof space into an energy-generating asset, helping reduce grid consumption while making better use of surplus generation.

The important bit? Bigger isn't automatically better. A commercial system should be designed around your actual consumption, available space, export capacity and future energy requirements.

Redditors in the r/SolarUK subreddit sparred over a familiar home-energy question of whether a relatively small battery can still make a meaningful difference on electricity bills:

The discussion picked up after a homeowner with a larger setup said their battery was already close to full despite cloudy weather.

Will your existing radiators work with a heat pump? šŸŒ”ļø

Not always, and that’s why room-by-room heat loss calculations matter.

Before designing a heat pump system, we calculate how much heat each room needs and check whether the existing radiators can deliver it at the proposed flow temperature.
āœ“ 100% = radiator meets the calculated requirement
āš ļø Below 100% = the radiator may be undersized

Heat pumps work most efficiently at lower flow temperatures, so getting the radiator sizing right helps keep your home comfortable and the system running efficiently.
Good heat pump design starts with the property, not the heat pump.

Your heat pump is working. But is it working properly?

Regular servicing isn't simply about checking that a heat pump switches on and produces heat. It gives us an opportunity to look at how the whole system is performing, identify potential problems before they develop into faults, and make adjustments where they can improve operation.

During a service, we check that components are operating correctly, assess the condition and performance of the system, and look for anything that could be affecting how efficiently or reliably it runs.

And if something isn't quite right, we'll explain what we've found and advise on any changes or additions that may help keep the system performing as it should.

With 15 years of experience in heat pump servicing, installation and fault finding, we've seen plenty of systems that work, but don't necessarily work as well as they could.

We're also F-Gas qualified, giving our team the knowledge to assess the refrigeration side of the system, including compressors and faults that can sometimes result from poor installation or system design.

A heat pump is an investment in your property. Regular servicing helps protect it.

Another Mitsubishi Ecodan heat pump serviced and checked by VIA Energy, helping make sure the system continues to perform as it should.

Regular servicing helps to:
- Identify potential issues before they become costly faults
- Check the heat pump is operating efficiently
- Ensure key components are working correctly
- Make adjustments to improve system performance
- Help protect the system and extend its working life

A heat pump isn’t fit-and-forget. Good performance needs looking after.

Good heat pump performance starts long before the unit is installed.

Our engineer Gary is a Certified Heat Geek Installer and has completed the Heat Geek Ultimate Heat Pump Training workshop, developing his knowledge of heat-loss calculations, system design, controls and efficient heat-pump operation.

At VIA Energy, we look at the whole heating system and the property around it, rather than simply replacing one piece of equipment with another.

Because getting a heat pump right isn't just about choosing the right unit. It's about designing the right system around the property.

Designed properly. Installed properly.

ā˜€ļø There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solar system.

Every home is different, and a well-designed solar installation should reflect that.

Available roof space, orientation and shading all affect how much electricity a system can generate. But the design shouldn’t stop at the roof. How much electricity the household uses, when it uses it, whether battery storage makes sense and how exported electricity will be paid for can all influence the right solution.

These are just a few of the solar installations we’ve completed across Devon, each designed around a different property and its energy requirements.

Thinking about solar? Start by understanding what will actually work for your home.

šŸŒ¦ļø "We live in Devon. Is there enough sun for solar panels?"

It's a question we hear surprisingly often.

Solar panels don't need hot weather or uninterrupted blue skies to generate electricity. They generate from daylight, meaning they continue producing electricity on cloudy days, although naturally at a lower output than under strong direct sunlight.

Recent UK analysis has even estimated that households in some of Britain's cloudiest regions could still save around £450 a year with rooftop solar.
