☀️This summer’s heatwave has raised a question a lot of businesses would rather not have to ask... is our workplace actually fit for the climate we now live in?

Many teams have been told to work from home this summer, simply because their offices can't cope. No adequate cooling, poor ventilation, glass-heavy buildings turning into greenhouses by midday. It's an uncomfortable reminder that "unprecedented" weather is becoming a lot more precedented, and that office design hasn't always kept pace.

It's not just heat we need to design for. UK winters still bring cold conditions, a workplace that's only built to cope with one extreme isn't really solving the problem, all it’s doing is just moving it six months down the line.

A well-designed, well-conditioned office keeps teams in the building, all year round… focused and comfortable, whatever the forecast is.

Delivering a harmonious design across several floors is no small task.
How to design a workplace that feels connected across multiple floors?

For FNZ's 30,000 sq ft office at 20 West Register Street, Edinburgh, our focus was on harmoniously linking every floor. This meant incorporating the FNZ brand look and feel, with striking black and white, and softer woods and highlights of yellow across all floors.

We gave each space its own purpose - a challenge we approached through considered zoning, consistent brand cues, and a central space, a large breakout and teapoint area on the middle floor, that ties the whole office together.

What if one of the most important design decisions isn't just where the walls go, but what they're made of?
Doing things differently means looking harder at the materials most people would overlook.

On a recent luxury washroom project, rather than sending the existing terrazzo to landfill, we collected it, crushed it into high-quality aggregate, and gave it a second life as new premium terrazzo flooring and wall tiles. Urban-mined, the result carries genuine history in its surfaces.

Materiality selection isn't just a finishing touch for workplaces, it's a driver of how a space feels, sounds, ages, and performs.

🥪☕Last year alone we had the pleasure of hosting over 50 incredible suppliers for lunch and learn sessions at our London office! From flooring and acoustics to fabrics, furniture and wallcoverings, we welcomed some of the country's leading suppliers to the workplace sector.

These sessions are an opportunity to learn, but they also inspire our design team, spark ideas and provide a fantastic platform for the entire GTA team to ask questions, exchange ideas, and explore new ways to continue designing exceptional workplaces to our clients.
