Nothing lasts for ever, and older clay ware and cast iron drainage systems serving London properties are deteriorating and either requiring restoration with relining or modernizing alterations like the removal of broken Buchan traps and the installation of new manhole chambers to provide sufficient access for regular inspection and maintenance cleaning of the drainage system.

When removing Buchan or interceptor traps we strongly advise the installation of inline non return valves to replace some of the functions that the traps were designed and used for. Simply installing a straight section of pipe welcomes sewer rats into your private drainage system and also the venting of gases from the sewer. For the extra few hundred pounds, a fixed in place non return valve will also prevent sewer back flow and prevent basement property flooding.

Sewer rats can be a serious problem for London residents and business owners causing property damage and posing serious health risks through direct and indirect contact such as leptospirosis (Weil's disease), hantavirus, rat bite fever, plague and salmonellosis. Rats enter private and communal drainage systems located beneath and around residential and commercial properties via the lateral public sewer connection, with missing interceptor trap rodding access caps and instances where Buchan or interceptor traps have been removed and only a straight section of pipe has been installed instead of a replacement trap or inline non-return valve are common facilitators in allowing rats into your home or business. Once the door has been left a jar unless the private drainage system is of a sound structural condition and sealed the rats have found a new home, from which they will either tunnel up from holes within the pipework or from redundant sections of pipe that have not been capped off correctly and even climb soil stack pipes to enter loft spaces and cavities within properties. Whilst Pro-Drain Ltd do not undertake baiting or other methods of eradication we assist our clients affected by rat infestations by firstly surveying the drainage system identifying the route in from the sewer and also point at which they are escaping the system to gain entry to the property we then undertake repairs and alterations to the drainage system for example drain linings to seal and structurally restore damaged drains or install non return valve units with double and metal backed flaps to ensure that rats can no longer enter the properties drainage system via the public sewer.
