Here’s a recent project where we combined a bit of electrical work with some bespoke carpentry 🔨⚡️

We installed a dedicated socket for the TV, ran a hidden HDMI cable for a clean, clutter-free finish, and wall-mounted the TV.
-
But the customer also had a slightly different request…

They had some existing shelves tucked underneath the stairs in a cupboard, but they weren’t happy with the storage solution. So, we got our tools out and hand-made a new set of bespoke shelves to make much better use of the space.
-
The result? A much cleaner TV setup and a far more practical storage area — all finished to the customer’s requirements. 👌

It’s always nice when a job gives us the opportunity to do something a little different!

⚠️ Just because a consumer unit is only a few years old doesn’t mean it’s safe.

We recently had to replace a consumer unit that had been installed only a few years ago.

Unfortunately, it had been poorly fitted from the outset, with damage caused during the original installation. Over time, these issues can lead to unreliable operation and, more importantly, create potential safety risks.

🔧 Works carried out:

1. Removed the damaged consumer unit.
2. Inspected the existing wiring for any further defects.
3. Installed a new consumer unit.
4. Re-terminated and tested all circuits.
5. Completed full electrical testing and certification.
6. Left the installation safe, compliant, and ready for many years of reliable service.

⚠️ Dangerous Electrical Installation Discovered During an EICR ⚠️

While carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), we uncovered a serious safety issue within this consumer unit.

The previous electrician had bypassed the RCD to prevent it from tripping. This meant that an important safety device designed to protect against electric shock and help reduce the risk of electrical fires had effectively been taken out of service.

Rather than simply masking the problem, we carried out the necessary testing and fault-finding to identify the root cause. Our investigation revealed a short circuit on the ground floor lighting circuit, which was causing the RCD to operate as intended.

🔧 Works carried out:

1. Completed a full EICR and identified safety concerns.
2. Discovered the RCD had been bypassed.
3. Carried out fault-finding and testing.
4. Located a short circuit on the ground floor lighting circuit.
5. Rectified the fault.
6. Replaced the consumer unit.
7. Fully tested the installation and verified compliance.

This installation highlights why safety devices should never be bypassed. An RCD that trips repeatedly is warning of an underlying fault. Disabling the protection may stop the nuisance tripping, but it leaves the installation and its occupants at risk of electric shock, fire, and potentially fatal consequences.

EICR of the year… and we may have found the winner for “Worst Meter Cupboard Positioning” 🏆⚡

Who looked at this staircase and thought:
“Perfect place for an electric meter cupboard… let’s put it halfway above the stairs and add a handrail directly in front of it for good measure.” 😂

Honestly, the design planning here is impressive in all the wrong ways:
✔️ Awkward access
✔️ Above a stairwell
✔️ Handrail blocking the door
✔️ Zero thought for future maintenance or inspections 😅

You can always tell when practicality was never invited to the design meeting!
