One of the realities of running a business and having a busy family life… finding the time and energy to actually cook! 😂

After a full day painting, sorting quotes, messages and then coming home to family life, sometimes a takeaway is simply the easiest option. 🍕🍔

You can’t do everything perfectly. Sometimes you’ve just got to make life a little easier where you can! 💪🎨

Today is all about the woodwork!

Getting that fresh white back onto the woodwork today using Armstead Quick Dry Satin — giving everything a clean, sharp finish.

This will be the first coat, then once the ceilings and walls are fully painted, I’ll come back around to the woodwork and give it that final fresh coat of satin to finish everything off properly.

It’s all about working in the right order and making sure that final coat of woodwork is left looking crisp, clean and fresh. 👌

Prep is key, not the finish. 🎨

🏠 NEW PROJECT – HALL, STAIRS & LANDING 🎨

Brand-new job started today, tackling a full hall, stairs and landing!

When I know I’m going to be on a project for more than a few days, I always like to go that extra step with protection. Carpets, hard flooring and surrounding areas are properly covered because the last thing you want is to create another job while doing the one you’re there for! 👌

Today has been 100% about the preparation.

🛠️ Rubbing down and preparing all the woodwork
🎨 Applying Dulux Trade Uni Primer to create a solid base for the finishing coats
🔧 Filling and patching any holes and imperfections
👌 Caulking gaps and getting those lines looking clean
🧹 Making sure the surfaces are properly prepared before the decorating really begins

It might not be the most glamorous part of the job, but prep is what makes the finish. There’s no point rushing to get paint on the walls and woodwork if the surface underneath isn't right.

It’s been a seriously busy first day, but we've made some great progress!

Tomorrow, I’m hoping to get the first coat onto the woodwork and get the ceiling painted, so we should really start seeing this hall, stairs and landing come together. 🎨💪

Another productive day for JTR’S Painting & Decorating.

Prep is key, not the finish. 👌🎨

🎨 KNOW YOUR PRIMERS – THEY'RE NOT ALL THE SAME!

One product I've increasingly been recommending is Dulux Trade Aqua UniPrimer, and personally, I'd choose it over the traditional Dulux Trade Quick Dry Wood Primer Undercoat for many of the situations I come across.

So what's the difference?

The Quick Dry Wood Primer Undercoat is still a perfectly good product. It's a water-based primer/undercoat designed predominantly for timber, including softwood, hardwood, chipboard and fibreboard, as well as previously painted woodwork.

UniPrimer, however, is a completely different animal. 👌

It's essentially a primer, sealer, stain blocker and undercoat all in one, with excellent adhesion across a much wider range of surfaces.

We're talking:

• Timber and MDF
• Previously painted surfaces
• uPVC
• Aluminium, iron, steel and galvanised metal
• Glossy laminates
• Powder-coated surfaces
• Ceramic tiles
• Plaster and drywall
• Even glass

It can also help block troublesome stains such as water staining, nicotine/smoke damage, grease and tannin bleed, while also inhibiting rust.

Then there's the drying time. UniPrimer can be touch dry in around 30 minutes and recoatable in around an hour under suitable conditions, which can make a massive difference when you're trying to keep a job moving.

That's why, for me, UniPrimer is the more versatile product to have in the van.

But the bigger point of this post is the picture below. 👇

There are loads of different primers available to us as professional decorators, and there isn't one primer that's automatically right for every situation.

You've got adhesion primers, stain blockers, wood primers, MDF primers, sealers, specialist primers for difficult surfaces and products designed for very specific problems.

Understanding what you're painting, what's already on the surface and what you're putting over it is massively important.

Sometimes the most important coat of paint on the entire job is the one the customer will never actually see.

Get the preparation and primer right, and you're giving your finishing coats the best possible foundation.

Prep is key, not the finish. 🎨👌

🎨 WHAT AN INCREDIBLY BUSY WEEK FOR JTR’S PAINTING & DECORATING! 🎨

It’s been one of those weeks where the days have absolutely flown by!

I started the week with a two-day lounge refresh, giving the entire room a fresh new lease of life — walls, ceiling and woodwork all completed. 👌

And as I always say when it comes to ceilings, Dulux Ultra Matt is one of the best ceiling paints out there, in my opinion. A brilliant finish and definitely one I’m always happy to recommend.

Then it was straight onto the next project — a three-day lounge, dining area and kitchen refresh.

This one needed plenty of attention before the paint could even come out. There were some major cracks across the ceiling and other areas that needed properly sorting, filling, sanding and preparing to get everything looking right before the finishing coats went on.

That’s the part people don’t always see — the preparation behind the finished result. You can’t rush it if you want the end result to look the part.

Prep is key, not the finish! 🎨💪

Two projects completed, five very busy working days, and another successful week for JTR’S Painting & Decorating.

Now it’s time to put the brushes and rollers down and enjoy the weekend! 😂🍻

Have a cracking weekend, everyone, and thank you as always for the continued support! ❤️

Another day running JTR’S Painting & Decorating… 😂🎨🐾

Between getting jobs finished, answering messages, sorting quotes and keeping everything moving, there’s always one member of the team who couldn’t care less about the workload… Lola!

Rain? Mud? Work waiting? Doesn’t matter. When Lola decides it’s walkies time, apparently it’s walkies time! 😂

So if I’m a little slow replying to your quote or message, just picture me being dragged uncontrollably through a muddy field while the real boss of JTR’S sets the schedule.

Just another day balancing business, family, life… and one very determined Labrador! 😂

🎨 THREE-DAY PROJECT COMPLETE! 👌

Lounge, dining room and a small kitchen area — walls, ceilings and woodwork all finished! 🙌

But decorating is never just a case of turning up, opening a tin of paint and getting the roller out.

The prep work is what makes the difference.

This job had some particularly nasty cracks across the ceiling that needed proper attention. Rather than simply filling them and hoping for the best, I applied mesh tape to reinforce the affected areas, followed by the necessary preparation to give them the best chance of staying crack-free in the future.

Cracks, imperfections, rough areas — these are the things you need to find and deal with before the finishing paint goes anywhere near the surface.

Once the preparation was right, it was time for the good stuff:

🎨 Ultra Matt on the ceilings
🎨 Dulux Heritage Velvet Matt on the walls
🎨 Armstead Quick Dry Satin on the woodwork

Three days of prep, patience and painting — and another project completed! 💪🎨

Prep is key, not the finish. The finish is the reward for getting the prep right. 👌

Apologies for the late post today, everyone! 🎨 The hours have absolutely flown by — it’s been one of those incredibly busy days!

Ceiling finished today using Dulux Ultra Matt, which, in my opinion, is one of the best ceiling paints out there and something I’ll always happily recommend. 👌

Now it’s all about getting the cutting-in done with the colour, getting those lines nice and tidy, and hopefully bringing everything together for the finish tomorrow.

Another cracking day on the brushes and rollers! 💪

As always, patience and the correct preparation are key. Get the prep right, take your time, and the finish will follow.

Hopefully another completed project tomorrow! 🎨🏠

🏡 A fresh front makes all the difference!

While I’m busy keeping on top of my own projects, I’ve sent in my man Louis to give this porch a well-deserved refresh. 🎨💪

A bit of preparation, some fresh paint and plenty of attention to detail — bringing that entrance back to life and giving the front of the home a clean, sharp finish.

If I can’t do it, I’ll send in someone I trust. 👌

🎨 New Job, New Transformation!

Starting a fresh project today covering the lounge, dining area and kitchen — and there’s plenty to get stuck into!

Lots of cracks to fill, plenty of sanding to get everything smooth, and a whole lot of preparation before the paint even thinks about coming out. 💪

It might not be the glamorous part of decorating, but good prep makes a good finish.
