🧳 Going away as the weather gets colder?

It can be tempting to switch the heating off completely while you're away, but during colder weather that's not always the best idea.

Before you leave:
🏠 Consider maintaining a low background temperature rather than switching the heating off completely

❄️ Check whether your boiler has a frost-protection setting
🌡️ Make sure your thermostat and heating controls are set appropriately
💧 Don't switch the boiler off if doing so disables its frost protection

📖 Check your boiler manufacturer's instructions if you're unsure how its frost protection works

Keeping some protection in place can help reduce the risk of frozen pipes and other cold-weather problems while your home is empty.

🔥 Cold radiator? Before you reach for the radiator key, check WHERE it's cold.

There's an important difference:

Cold at the TOP?
Air trapped inside the radiator could be preventing hot water from filling it properly. Bleeding the radiator may help.

Cold at the BOTTOM?
This can be a sign of sludge or debris collecting inside the radiator and restricting circulation — and simply bleeding it won't remove that.

So, a cold radiator doesn't automatically mean it needs bleeding.
Knowing where the cold spots are can give you a useful clue as to what's going on with your heating system.

🌡️ Ever wondered what the numbers on your radiator valve actually mean?

If you have thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), the numbers aren't simply low, medium and high heat settings.

A TRV senses the temperature around the radiator and controls the flow of hot water to help maintain the temperature you've selected.

And here's a common misconception…

Turning it straight up to 5 won't make a cold room heat up faster. It simply tells the valve to keep heating until the room reaches a higher temperature.

Using your TRVs properly can help you avoid unnecessarily heating rooms more than you need to.
