November 2022

How to protect your turf this wet winter.

Rain, rain, rain. What a start we have had to November! We have put together some helpful tips to help keep your lawn its best over the next few months.

Top tips
- Do not walk on wet grass
- Avoid mowing wet grass and lawns
- Remove debris/leaves from on your lawn regularly.
- Aerate flooded lawns after they dry
- Improve the drainage of your lawn

No Mow! Why Mowing Wet Grass Isn’t a Good Idea -
As frustrating as it may be, you need to give your lawn time to recover from wet weather and dry out. Avoid attempting to mow a wet or saturated lawn as you risk compaction and ruts. Obviously do not use an electric lawn mower in damp or wet conditions! Wait until the lawn has dried out, then set the mower blades to the highest possible cutting height.

Put Lawn Aeration on Your To-Do List -
If you have experienced flooded areas or large puddles your lawn may benefit from aeration! This involves using spiked roller to punch thousands of holes in the soil and bring back some of the spaces needed to allow surface water to drain through the soil.

October 2022 – Steps to put your garden to bed

Winter is on its way which means that you should begin to prepare your garden for the colder months. Time to clean up and “winterify” your space. As annual vegetables near the end of their lifespan and the weather begins to get cooler you can reduce the amount of work necessary in the spring by taking these steps to put your garden to bed.

1. CLEAN UP
Remove weeds and debris
Turn the soil
Rake, tidy, and remove all dead plant material in order to freshen up your garden space
Check your compost for mildew, mould, and blight

2. PREPARE SOIL
Add fertilizer or compost to your soil.

3. MULCHING
Cover your soil with one to three inches of mulch to protect the soil from being washed away.

4. GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Autumn is the time to take care of some general maintenance for your garden. This includes cleaning, sharpening, and oiling the blades in your garden tools.
We recommend washing seed trays and fix or replace any broken equipment that you will need in the year to come.

Part of preparing your garden is making sure that you have all of the necessary ingredients to have the perfect garden in the Spring.

September 2022 – Organic September

This month marks the start of Organic September, a month-long campaign founded and run by The Soil Association to raise awareness of Organic products, and the brands, producers and farmers who bring them to us in the UK.

The campaign first began in 1994 and was originally known as Organic Harvest until 2012 when it was re-named as Organic September.

Benefits of “going organic” include combating the climate crisis, supporting biodiversity and reduced exposure to pesticides.

Foods labelled as organic meet strict regulations on how they have been grown and produced.
• Contain no artificial additives or preservatives.
• Contain fewer pesticides. There are only 20 pesticides that can be used by organic farmers all of which are derived from natural ingredients. This is compared to almost 300 pesticides used in regular farming.
• Conform to high standards of animal welfare.
• Contain no genetically modified ingredients.
• Have been produced in a way that is sustainable.

The Soil Association says that by switching just one item in your shop to organic will help contribute to changing our food system. The knock-on effect is more organic farms, fewer pesticides used which is better for our wildlife and it also means more farm animals will be raised under higher welfare standards.

You can get involved by supporting organic farmers in your local area, buying organic or even attempting to grow your own organic produce at home.

We can supply screened topsoil and compost to start your organic gardening journey.

August 2022 Topsoil Grade -v- Cost

Topsoil is one of the most important elements of a garden including laying turf, bedding plants, trees or shrubs. If you use the incorrect grade your project may be unsuccessful or unnecessarily expensive.

Eco is our cheapest grade of material, screened to 20mm. We do not recommend is for seeding or planting, but it is ideal to fill large holes such as a disused pond and for laying turf on.

Premium soil is the more expensive option, screened to 10mm it is ideal for flower beds and borders, vegetable plots and improving existing soil. It can also be used in the construction of sports surfaces such as football fields, tennis courts and golf courses.

We supply bulk lose delivery from 1 tonne to 20 tonne loads.

July 2022 Top 3 plants to get rid of pests

MINT
Mint repels mosquitoes, ants, beetles, fleas, and even mice. It is suggested you plant in a pot due to the invasive nature.

ROSEMARY
Rosemary is one of the best plants to get rid of pests. Typically, gardeners use this herb to protect vegetable plants, though it can also repel mosquitoes and flies. Ward off pests by placing in containers or directly in your garden.

LAVENDER
Lavender repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes. Plant by your doors or in window boxes to keep pests outside. One of the best uses of this plant is its calming effect, it lowers your heart rate and makes it easier to sleep.

If you are undertaking a garden project we can supply sand, topsoil and a variety of aggregates.
