Jenkinson Builders are based near the popular town of Hay-On-Wye, founded over 50 years ago. Over the Years we have resisted the temptation to expand in order to maintain our hard fought reputation for providing work of the very highest standard, matched by good old fashioned values for reliability and personal customer service.

Morning site visits to assess a Church roof in a beautiful location, Bleddfa.

Bleddfa means ‘the abode of wolves’, and wolves were still to be found in Radnor Forest until Tudor times.

St Mary’s Magdalene Church has fascinating history; for years a mysterious mound at the west end of the church was thought to be a prehistoric burial chamber, but when it was excavated in the 1960s it was discovered to be the base of a substantial stone tower to the church. Excavations showed that the tower had been burned down, and it is assumed this happened during the revolt of Welsh patriot Owain Glyndwr in the 15th century.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Brecon Beacons, this is a completed project of ours.

In collaboration with architects, we converted these old Welsh stone buildings to create a welcoming and versatile space for our clients growing extended family.

The brief was to retain and upgrade the barns as sustainably and low energy as possible.

We laid our first limecrete floor slab system from and the barns also received hempcrete wall linings, lime plaster and sheep’s wool insulation.

An air source heat pump runs the hot water and underfloor heating.

Beautiful finishes include internal cedar cladding contrasted with exposed original wooden beams and local businesses supplied the cosy wood fired stove and the beautiful kitchen worktop.

National Winners! 🎉

We are delighted to announce that our project Old Gwernyfed, Powys has been awarded as the National Winner in the Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home category at the LABC Grand Finals 2025!

The judges praised this project for its sensitive approach to restoring a historic building…

“This stunning conversion creates an extraordinary living space, with the entire end of the existing ruin glazed and a bespoke staircase made from glass and oak. Due to the sensitive nature of this Grade I Listed building, implementation of building regulations had to be applied with care and due diligence to avoid compromising the ancient fabric.”

The LABC Building Excellence Awards have long been established as the premier accolades within the industry; recognising the companies and individuals that demonstrate a commitment to competence, quality and standards in delivering safe and sustainable buildings for the communities we live and work in.

We had a truly special evening celebrating.

The Old School | Yr Hen Ysgol

This has been a very special project to work on and we’re so pleased the new Black Mountains College building is complete and ready to start the next chapter with the community and learning at its heart.

Many members of the local community will remember the derelict Victorian school once serving as a primary school and youth club. This reimagined space has gone back to its teaching roots and will now provide teaching and community spaces for

The projects design was to provide a space with low embodied energy and running costs by enhancing the buildings fabric but keeping in mind the importance of retaining key features such as following the design of the previous windows.

Instead of conventional synthetic insulation. The solid masonry walls were lined in Hempcrete blocks and finished with a clay paint. The roof and floor received sheep’s wool insulation from and the flooring was finished with a natural, CO2-neutral Marmoleum.

A special thanks to Councillor William Powell, instrumental in getting the project off the ground, Featherstone Young Architects and Black Mountains College.
