National Winners! 🎉

We are delighted to announce that our project Old Gwernyfed, Powys has been awarded as the National Winner in the Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home category at the LABC Grand Finals 2025!

The judges praised this project for its sensitive approach to restoring a historic building…

“This stunning conversion creates an extraordinary living space, with the entire end of the existing ruin glazed and a bespoke staircase made from glass and oak. Due to the sensitive nature of this Grade I Listed building, implementation of building regulations had to be applied with care and due diligence to avoid compromising the ancient fabric.”

The LABC Building Excellence Awards have long been established as the premier accolades within the industry; recognising the companies and individuals that demonstrate a commitment to competence, quality and standards in delivering safe and sustainable buildings for the communities we live and work in.

We had a truly special evening celebrating.

Thank you to everyone who worked on this wonderful project with us and of course the clients, for trusting us with their vision for Old Gwernyfed.

The Old School | Yr Hen Ysgol

This has been a very special project to work on and we’re so pleased the new Black Mountains College building is complete and ready to start the next chapter with the community and learning at its heart.

Many members of the local community will remember the derelict Victorian school once serving as a primary school and youth club. This reimagined space has gone back to its teaching roots and will now provide teaching and community spaces for

The projects design was to provide a space with low embodied energy and running costs by enhancing the buildings fabric but keeping in mind the importance of retaining key features such as following the design of the previous windows.

Instead of conventional synthetic insulation. The solid masonry walls were lined in Hempcrete blocks and finished with a clay paint. The roof and floor received sheep’s wool insulation from and the flooring was finished with a natural, CO2-neutral Marmoleum.

A special thanks to Councillor William Powell, instrumental in getting the project off the ground, Featherstone Young Architects and Black Mountains College.

Thank you to for providing the wonderful photographs of the new space.

LABC Wales Winner - Best Residential Conversion / Alteration to an Existing Home.

Jenkinson Builders are extremely proud to have been part of this acclaimed project where Medieval history has met the present day.

In Circa 1750 the South Wing of this Grade 1 Listed Old Gwernyfed Manor House suffered a catastrophic fire. Resulting in the wing becoming a ruin until 2022, when Jenkinson Builders were commissioned to undertake this multifaceted project.

The work was carried out under a strict archaeological brief due to the historical importance of the land. We implemented many different traditional trades ranging from;

- Stone carving to repair the stone mullion windows
- Traditional leaded lights and casement windows
- Careful restoration to existing stone walls using lime mortar matched to existing

The clever design brief from was to showcase by contrast, the original stonework with a modern frameless glass facade standing at an impressive 11.5m high, skilfully installed by

J A Francis of Knighton also provided structural steel to form the mezzanine floors and impressive roof structure enabling three new internal floor levels with maximised natural light and outward views.

Jenkinson Builders would like to extend this congratulations to the whole project team and of course a huge thanks to the clients to bring about this magnificent transformation.

Thank you for sharing the finished photographs.

This week we’ve been carrying out maintenance on this beautiful property in Pembrokeshire that we completed in 2018.

It features a Zinc roof, that is carved out like a wave, as a token to the stunning Pembrokeshire coast just 1/2 mile away. Along with many other attributes this property offers, the boundary stone walls were rebuilt by local stone masons who use a specific dry stone walling practice common in West Wales.

We could think of worse places to be…

This is one of our ongoing projects near Peterchurch, Herefordshire.

Here we have some wonderful Arches built with reclaimed stone from the original farm house. They were built by some of our talented stonemasons Joseph and Rhys.

The Arches have no key stone to customers requirements, therefore built with cement for enhanced strength. The rest of the stonework is built in lime supplied by Ty Mawr Lime.
