🏠Design Spotlight - R.HOUSE options 🏠

One of the things I enjoy most about working with R.HOUSE is seeing how people make their home their own.

While our homes are built around a standardised design which is optimised for plot and client, no two ever end up exactly the same, as can be seen in our photographs.

Some clients want a vaulted ceiling to create a greater sense of space. Others add a porch for those wet Highland days, a larger utility room for muddy boots and dogs, or bigger windows to make the most of a particular view.

Then there are the decisions you don't always see. Upgrading solar panels, adding larger battery storage, or investing in technology that helps make a home even more energy efficient for years to come. (did you know our houses reach an 88B energy rating as standard)

It's often the small choices that make a house feel like your home.

So I'm curious...

What would be the one thing you'd add to your home?

A porch? A bigger utility? Larger windows? A vaulted ceiling? Or perhaps a solar and battery upgrade?

Let me know below.

From Raft Foundations to Racing Rafts... apparently it's the same skill set!

As housebuilders, we're well versed in raft foundations. What we didn't realise was how easily that knowledge would transfer to building an actual raft.

Team R.HOUSE took to the water for our maiden voyage on 'Marag Dhubh' for the Skye Week Raft Race, hosted by the Portree RNLI and Skye Radio, and somehow managed to paddle away with the fastest raft on Skye. GO TEAM!

The team approached the build the same way they approach every project: solid planning, practical solutions, and a strong focus on performance.

Admittedly, aesthetics took a back seat this year. When the brief is "fast and afloat", beauty becomes a secondary consideration!

Next year we'll bring the architectural team along to add a few finishing touches. The builders have proven they can deliver speed, now it's time to see if the architects can keep up.

A huge well done to everyone who took part and a massive thank you to the organisers and volunteers for putting on a brilliant event.

Turns out building on raft foundations is just boatbuilding with extra steps. 😎🚣‍♂️🏆

HANDOVER DAY!

Three new homes.
Some very well-known Skye families.
One very proud R.HOUSE team.

It's been an absolute pleasure handing over the keys to these fantastic homes – including one to our own Managing Director (no pressure there then!).
What makes these projects especially meaningful is that each family has strong roots in Skye. Building homes that allow people to stay connected to the place they love is exactly why we do what we do.

Congratulations to all three families - and thankyou. We can't wait to see the memories made in these homes for years to come. (And for us to come back for some real photos!)

What do you actually get with an R.HOUSE?

Well, you get a beautiful house.

Designed for its site. Built here on Skye. Made to sit properly in the landscape rather than simply being dropped on it.
But that's the bit everyone sees.

What people don't see is everything that happens before a spade even goes into the ground.

One of the biggest bits of feedback we get from clients is how much they appreciate not having to deal with all the stuff nobody tells you about when you decide to build.

Because somewhere along the line, building a house became less about building a house and more about becoming an expert in drainage, site investigations, flood reports, SEPA paperwork and when somebody tells you that you need an arboriculturist. Most people don't even know what an arboriculturist does until they're suddenly told they might need one.

So whilst you're thinking about kitchens, bathrooms and where the sofa goes, we're dealing with all the complicated bits in the background.

The big stuff. The boring stuff. The stuff you never knew existed. Not very glamorous. But probably one of the most valuable parts of what we do.
It's all included from the start. Which means one team, one process, and far fewer headaches.

Spotlight on the R1

The R1 might be one of our smallest homes… but honestly, it punches well above its weight.

Because it’s built using cassettes instead of trusses, you get this beautiful vaulted ceiling running right through the space. (Well… apart from the bathroom. We had to calm ourselves somewhere.)

It’s a real nod to the wee byres you see dotted around the Highlands & Islands — and the minute you add a bit of stone cladding, it just belongs in the landscape.

One thing we love doing with the R1 is pairing it with our R2. Suddenly this whole space becomes your kitchen and living area and… wow. Such a good example of how flexible modular design can be.

Starting from £200,650, you can have a nosy at more plans and photos below 👇

While most of the UK seems to be enjoying a heatwave, Skye is living up to its name - Eilean a’ Cheò
(The Misty Isle).

Low hanging mist, a fairly breezy weekend and finally, some rain (which at least keeps the midges at bay).

The weather tends to shape quite a lot up here.

Not just the landscape, but how buildings sit, how materials age, and how details are put together

You start thinking differently about door openings, shelter, durability and what actually lasts in these environments.

That's why we’re drawn to quieter materials such a a local larch cladding, materials that weather properly
and buildings that feel like they belong here in the first place

Not fighting the landscape just sitting within it
Designed for the environment, not against it.

Followers of R.HOUSE will know how passionate we are about being part of the solution to delivering sustainable homes for local people across the Highlands.

We are not a volume housebuilder or a faceless developer parachuting into communities. R.HOUSE has always been rooted in the Highlands — understanding the needs, realities and limitations that rural communities face because we live and work within them ourselves.

That’s why projects like Strathcarron matter so much to us.

Much like our recent Kyleakin development, Strathcarron is a brilliant example of how mixed-use developments can support thriving Highland communities — bringing together community housing and private homes to create balanced, sustainable places for people to live and stay long term.

By working alongside landowners like Attadale Trust, Highland Council ahousing organisations including Communities Housing Trust & Lochalsh & Skye Housing Association, we can help deliver homes that genuinely respond to local need while supporting the future of rural communities.

From Glenelg, Staffin, Armadale and Raasay to Kilbeg, Kyleakin and now Strathcarron, our focus has never simply been about building houses — it’s about creating places and communities that will thrive for generations to come.

Every home is thoughtfully designed for modern Highland living, with air source heat pumps, high levels of insulation and an emphasis on sustainability, efficiency and longevity.

We’re incredibly proud to be part of that story.
