Agrivert & Chiltern Solar Volunteer with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV)

Yesterday, a group of employees from Agrivert and Chiltern Solar volunteered at the Aylesbury National Grid Compressor Site with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV). The team rolled up their sleeves for a day of practical conservation work, strimming tall grasses and weeds to mimic traditional meadow cuts, raking and removing the cuttings to maintain low soil nutrients and encourage wildflowers, and clearing small vegetation such as brambles and scrub to prevent the meadow from turning into woodland.

Although the Aylesbury National Grid site is industrial, the surrounding grassland, woodland and hedgerows are valuable havens for local wildlife when properly managed. By volunteering with TCV, Agrivert and Chiltern Solar are helping to boost local biodiversity by ensuring the meadow remains open and species-rich. Regular meadow management prevents grasslands from becoming overgrown, allowing a greater variety of wildflowers, insects, bees and butterflies to thrive. It also helps protect rare habitats, as species-rich meadows have declined dramatically in the UK and sites like this provide vital refuges. 🐝🐜🦗

In addition, proper vegetation management keeps pathways clear and reduces fire risks near critical infrastructure, ensuring safety and access for workers and visitors. Our work also supports National Grid’s commitment to protect and enhance biodiversity on its land.

Our efforts mean more wildflowers can bloom, pollinators and other wildlife can flourish, and the area remains a safer, healthier green space for everyone. We plan to return in September/October for their tree planting season.
A huge thank you to The Conservation Volunteers for organising and guiding us.
