If you drop your key and are locked out it is useful to have a number to hand rather than it be in a diary, or on a business card on a fridge magnet (normally located inside said property).

"What do locksmiths do?" and "Don't you just cut keys?"

The above are two things that I hear often.
The reality is the role is wide and varied and encompasses things from key cutting, door adjustments, gaining entry, access control and repairing and replacing locks...and much more.
We also do emergency boarding...

Here was one from this week. The window to a residential block had been broken and required boarding until the glass could be replaced.
We were onsite within the hour and work was completed to a high standard for the safety of those living there and members of the public walking by.

We are regularly asked by customers for recommendations about how to increase the level of security on a property. Especially with Insurance companies becoming more insistent and stringent within their policies.

This product is a big box ticker across the board:
The AP is a BSI 3 Star Kitemark, Sold Secure Diamond Standard Euro Cylinder which offers maximum protection.

"It's been difficult to lock for the past couple of months to be honest..."

UPVC/composite doors are something that require early intervention if they are starting to become difficult to lock.
The cause can be as simple as door misalignment which can be rectified in most cases.

If not addressed this can cause unnecessary stress on the gearbox/mechanism, and then it ultimately breaking.
Age and wear and tear can also cause breakage of a gearbox.

In these instances here it was wear and tear which ultimately required them to be replaced. In the first photo you can see the small piece of metal which shut down the workings of the door.

JG Locksmiths carry most gearboxes and therefore can replace there and then onsite.

This week we managed to cover just short of 500 miles in our Monday - Friday trade. A very busy one!

As normal work varied, however there was a definite peak in snapped keys. Here are 3 examples - 2 being obvious and the latter not so.

With snapped keys DO NOT listen to YouTube/TikTok/your mate 'Dave' when they tell you to "stick some glue in there and pull it out".
This will break the cylinder!

It is more cost effective to get a locksmith to remove it (and have the same keys) rather than getting a locksmith to remove a glued up cylinder to then replace it.

Even though it was a Bank Holiday we were still working hard throughout.

Although the majority of our locks come with 5 keys as standard there are still occasions where customers need/want more.

Here our customer required 54 more keys!!!! This due to it being a communal block of flats.

We were able to cut keys and test each one on site to ensure that they worked. This thanks to our mobile key cutting machine that we carry each day.
We also carry blanks compatible with locks that we supply, and various others to try and cover a large range.

Both doors on site were key'd alike which meant that residents only required one key, rather than two. This also a service we provide for both residential and business.

A good locksmith should be able to gain entry to a property with little/no damage caused.
If you have a failed lock the last thing you want to see is an engineer with a circular saw cutting up your 200 year old solid Oak door (nb. this does not relate to this set of photos lol).

Here we had a failed door in the locked position. We were able to open the door and replace the lock causing no damage.
5 x keys were supplied as standard with an anti-snap, drill and pick cylinder.

The customer in this circumstance was happy with our entry level cylinder.
We also supply 3* cylinders which are anti all known methods of attack, carry a 10 year warranty, a £2500 break in guarantee and have 5 x keys which are registered and password protected to you to ensure no copies can be made.

We're officially back on Social Media.
JG Locksmiths has been working hard serving the customers of Leicestershire and surrounding Counties but in this time has neglected it's Social Media (naughty!).

The plan is to post at least once a week some of the work that we have been doing so that you can see what we attend, and more importantly if it would be of help to yourself.

When selecting a cylinder for your door it is very important to get one which is of a good security level, but also one that fits the size of the door AND handle.
On this occasion we were visiting the address to complete unrelated work when we noticed that the cylinder on the front door had been fitted "back to front". By which we mean that the technology which prevents snapping was on the inside, not the outside.
Unfortunately the sizing of the door did not allow for the cylinder to be rotated and refitted.
On the landlords permission we were able to fit an anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill lock with 5 sets of keys.
Importantly the cylinder fitted flush to the handle to prevent any snap attempts and did not sit back (as the old one did in the pictures).

If in doubt it is always good practice to speak to a locksmith regarding the best locks for the job!
