If you don’t want to go to the trouble and expense of stripping wallpaper, and then possibly having to plaster, you could try using Zinsser 3 in 1 Wallpaper Cover Up Paint. It worked a treat on this project. We used Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer on the door to block out the old hardwood finish.
(Be Warned, it smells bad!)
