Gardens as Art: Planting Design

One of my favourite parts of designing gardens is creating planting schemes. I see planting schemes as an art form, creating them is very similar to mixing colours or working out which colours to use next to each other in a painting.

Contemplating how plants will talk to each other to create the atmosphere you are after and the concept you are aspiring to achieve. When I am working on planting schemes, the combinations and colours play in my mind, on walks and in dreams until they settle into their final combination, much like a colourful puzzle.

Winding pathways, a secluded nook to unwind in after work, floral woodland planting beneath the trees. This is how we have imagined the new garden to look and to work, here is a map of the idea we have created for the woodland garden.

Following the winding path through the trees you walk through the tranquil forest to your place of work. The woodland acts as a physical, conceptual and visual transitional space between home and work.

Plants provide habitat for a host of creatures and welcoming wildlife into your garden helps to restore biodiversity within your patch of land. Simply by increasing the plants you have in your garden you will attract birds, butterflies, bees, moths and so much more to share your space with. I've seen this happen in my garden.

Creating a garden enriches the experience of the place you inhabit for others as well as yourself such as passers by, neighbours, guests and family members who may all be inspired and uplifted by your garden.

Creating a Seaside Garden - Master Plan

Once the concept plan has been completed and presented to you, a detailed master plan can be created. This is where the finer details, specifications and materials are finalised ready for planting and installation by hard landscapers.

This step is detail orientated and highly focused, bringing the final design together ready for application. I love this stage of pulling all the concepts into a final drawing.

Here is the master plan for the seaside garden design. A design that celebrates the beautiful materials of the coast; tough seaside plants, silvered wood, stone, water and a collection of gorgeous trees.

A few summers ago I read the book 'A Garden Against Time' by Olivia Laing. The book follows Laing as she moves into her new house in Suffolk formally the home to Garden designer, Mark Rumary. The design, planting and vision he had for the garden which was created in the 1960's had fallen into disrepair. On moving in, Laing sets to work restoring the garden, she uses the intended design as a framework and guide in the way she salvages it.

A Garden design can be continually referred back to. It becomes a legacy to a garden and place, as Laing’s story exemplifies.
