🏛️ Celebrating World Architecture Day — 5th October 🌍

Today, we join the global design and construction community in celebrating World Architecture Day, a day that honours the creativity, innovation, and collaboration that shape the spaces where we live, work, and connect.

At Gloweth Builders, we understand that great architecture is more than just buildings — it’s about creating environments that inspire people and stand the test of time. Every project we build is a partnership between vision and craftsmanship, where architectural ideas are brought to life with precision, sustainability, and purpose.

We’re proud to work alongside architects who share our passion for quality, collaboration, and design excellence — one structure at a time.

Historic buildings are more than bricks and mortar—they tell the stories of our past. Protecting them requires a thoughtful approach, guided by the seven degrees of intervention in historic preservation.

These range from preventing deterioration, preserving a building's current condition, and consolidating original materials to restoration and rehabilitation that allow historic buildings to continue serving modern needs. Where elements have been lost, reproduction and reconstruction help restore their historic character using reliable evidence.

At Gloweth, we understand that every heritage project is unique. Choosing the right level of intervention ensures the history, character, and integrity of these buildings can be preserved for generations to come.

“I cannot look at modern buildings without thinking of historic ones.” - by Kevin McCloud

At Gloweth Builders, we believe the best modern buildings are often inspired by the past. Historic architecture teaches us about proportion, craftsmanship, materials and the character of a place. By understanding these traditions while embracing modern construction methods, we can create buildings that feel contemporary yet timeless, respecting what came before while building confidently for the future.

🏛️ Could heritage buildings help solve the UK's housing shortage?

A cross-party group of MPs believes they can.

A report brought out in July of this year suggests that bringing vacant and underused historic buildings back into use could deliver up to 670,000 homes—almost half of the government's 1.5 million home target.

At Gloweth, we know that restoring and repurposing existing buildings isn't just about preserving history—it's about creating sustainable, high-quality homes for future generations. Thoughtful renovation can breathe new life into neglected properties while protecting the character and heritage that make our communities unique.

As the conversation around housing continues, it's encouraging to see greater recognition of the role that heritage-led regeneration can play in addressing the UK's housing needs.

“High among the unpredictable variables that endanger the survival of worthy buildings are the vagaries of taste.” - by Martin Filler

At Gloweth, we believe that truly great buildings are designed to outlast changing trends and fleeting fashions. While styles evolve, quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and enduring construction remain timeless. Every project we undertake is built with longevity in mind—creating homes and spaces that are not only beautiful today but will continue to serve, inspire, and stand the test of time for generations to come.

🏗️ The best renovation savings are often designed in before a builder ever arrives on site.

Architects and consultants spend months developing schemes, but some of the most significant cost savings on renovation and refurbishment projects come from practical construction knowledge gained on site over many years. At Gloweth, we've worked on a wide variety of renovation projects across Cornwall, and we've seen first-hand where budgets can be protected without compromising design quality. The earlier these conversations happen, the more opportunities there are to deliver better outcomes for clients.

That's why we're looking to build stronger relationships with architects, architectural technologists and consultants across Cornwall. By staying connected, you can tap into practical site-based knowledge that helps inform future projects, improve buildability and potentially save clients money in the long run.

📐 Whether you're working on heritage renovations, extensions, conversions or bespoke homes, we're always happy to share lessons learned from projects on the ground.

Let's start a conversation about what we're seeing in Cornwall's renovation sector and how that knowledge can benefit your next project - https://www.gloweth.com

“You can be a mason and build 50 buildings, but it doesn't mean you can design one.” - by John Malkovich

At Gloweth Builders, great construction starts with great planning. Building is about more than bricks and mortar—it's about vision, expertise, and creating spaces that work beautifully for years to come.

From concept to completion, we believe every successful project begins with thoughtful design. 🏡✨

At Gloweth Builders, we believe restoring heritage buildings means honouring their original story. The materials used decades or centuries ago were sourced locally for a reason — they suited the climate, the landscape, and the craftsmanship of the time.

When carrying out restoration work, we prioritise locally sourced or carefully matched materials to preserve authenticity. Using traditional stone, timber, and lime-based mortars ensures repairs blend seamlessly with the existing structure while allowing the building to breathe and perform as intended.

Modern materials can compromise older properties, but sympathetic sourcing protects structural integrity and historic character. Just as importantly, working with local suppliers and skilled craftspeople helps sustain the heritage trades that keep these buildings alive.

For us, restoration isn’t just about repair — it’s about respectful preservation for generations to come.

“Great buildings that move the spirit have always been rare. In every case they are unique, poetic, products of the heart.” - by Arthur Erickson

Arthur Erickson’s quote highlights that truly memorable architecture is more than just functional design—it is an expression of creativity, emotion, and vision. Great buildings stand apart because they reflect the passion and imagination of their creators, transforming structures into works of art. His words remind us that the most inspiring spaces are those that connect with people on a deeper level, leaving a lasting impression on both the eye and the spirit.

Raising the Roof at St Mawgan in Pydar Church ⛪

We’re always proud to play a part in preserving Cornwall’s rich architectural heritage — and our recent project at St Mawgan in Pydar Church was no exception.

Working alongside our highly skilled subcontractors, we carried out a partial re-roofing project on this beautiful historic building. The works were scheduled early in the year to respect the annual life cycle of the church’s resident bats 🦇 — ensuring the project supported both the building’s future and the local wildlife that calls it home.

🌧 Almost daily rain from early January through to late February and beyond has brought the kind of challenges only a Cornish winter can deliver. But thanks to careful coordination, dedication on site, and true teamwork, we’re delighted with the result.

Despite the weather, the outcome has been top notch 🌟 — protecting this much-loved landmark for years to come.
