Overcomplication in safety is a growing issue?!

Somewhere along the line, safety became overly complicated. Endless procedures. Over-engineered management systems. Documentation that looks good on paper but doesn’t reflect reality.

The result? People switch off.

Time and time again businesses trying to “do safety right” by adding more, when often the answer is actually less… but better...

Our very own Chesney Smith explains his background in safety and the unique approach we engage with all our clients.

Gateway 2 Applications: Signs of Progress 👇

For the past 18 months, Gateway 2 has been defined by delays and frustration — but recent data suggests things are starting to improve.

✅ Applications are being processed at a steadier rate
✅ Backlogs and legacy cases are reducing
✅ Greater clarity on what “good” looks like

This reflects a wider shift not just within the Building Safety Regulator, but across the industry. Teams are adapting, collaboration is improving, and processes are maturing. The challenges haven’t gone away, but the direction is encouraging.

Perhaps the conversation is moving from “what’s broken?” to “how do we keep improving?” safe buildings and efficient delivery should always go hand in hand.

“If your health and safety could talk… what would it say?”

👀 The truth is, health and safety isn’t a checklist... It’s a voice.
The question is: are you listening?

Men’s Health Week: Let’s Talk About It! 👇

In industries like construction and engineering, the conversation around health often focuses on physical safety — but mental health matters just as much. Men are less likely to speak up about stress, fatigue, or mental wellbeing. That silence can have serious consequences, both on and off site.

At The Safety Department, we believe a strong safety culture goes beyond compliance.
It means:

✅ Encouraging open conversations
✅ Recognising the signs of stress and burnout
✅ Supporting teams to speak up early
✅ Creating environments where people feel supported

Looking after your people isn’t just the right thing to do it’s essential for safe, successful projects. This Men’s Health Week, take a moment to check in with your team. A simple conversation can make a real difference.

“Design vs Reality – Why Compliant Design Still Fails in Practice”
📅 1 July 2026 | 12:00–13:00 (online)

This webinar explores a challenge we see across the industry every day the gap between compliant design and real-world outcomes. Too often, meeting regulations is assumed to guarantee safe, buildable results. In practice, that’s not always the case!

As part of a wider programme focused on real-world design challenges, APS Design Week brings together industry professionals to share practical insight and improve competence across CDM and building safety roles

If you’re involved in design, project delivery or Principal Designer roles, this is a session worth attending.

“Good health and safety is invisible.” - Our job is to be invisible??

It’s a phrase we often come back to because when it’s done properly and we are able to offer our clients expert support, things simply run as they should. No disruption, no drama, just well-managed, well-delivered projects.

Done right, it becomes part of the culture, not an obstacle.

Health & safety site inspections shouldn’t feel like a tick-box exercise. They’re an opportunity to have the right conversations, spot things early, and support the people delivering the work every day.

This is where Chesney really adds value! 👷‍♂️

His approach is simple work with site teams, understand how things are actually being done, and offer practical, realistic input that helps keep standards high without getting in the way of progress.
