🌸 PLANT OF THE WEEK — MALLOWS 🌸
Malva spp. & Lavatera spp.

This week I’m celebrating Mallows — a gorgeous group of plants from the Malvaceae (mallow) family, including Malva and Lavatera. 💗

With their beautiful saucer-shaped flowers in shades of pink, mauve, lilac and white, they bring that wonderfully relaxed cottage-garden feel to borders.

🐝 Loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators
🌸 Long flowering — often from early summer into autumn
🌿 Easy-going and relatively low maintenance
☀️ Happy in sun, with some types tolerating partial shade
🌱 Many Malva species will happily self-seed

I particularly love the movement they bring to a garden — tall, airy stems and delicate flowers bobbing around in the breeze while the pollinators get stuck in. 🐝🦋

Pretty, wildlife-friendly and beautifully informal — what’s not to love about a mallow? 🌸

PLANT OF THE WEEK — JAPANESE ANEMONE 🌸

This week’s plant is one of my absolute favourites for bringing a little magic to the garden just when summer is beginning to wind down — the beautiful Japanese Anemone (Anemone hupehensis). 💛🌿

And before we go any further… Anemone is pronounced roughly “uh-NEM-uh-nee”.
One of those plant names that’s much easier to grow than it is to say! 😂

Japanese Anemones really come into their own from late summer into autumn, producing gorgeous pink or white flowers on tall, slender stems that seem to dance in the breeze.

🌿 Why gardeners love them:

🐝 Pollinator friendly — bees and other insects love the open flowers.

🌸 Fantastic late-season colour — flowering from around August into October, when lots of summer plants are beginning to fade.

☀️ Easy going — happy in sun or partial shade and particularly useful for bringing colour into slightly shadier borders.

🌱 Perennial — plant them once and they’ll return year after year.

💪 Hardy — well suited to UK gardens and generally very reliable once established.

💛 Beautiful movement — their tall stems and delicate flowers give borders that wonderfully relaxed, romantic feel.

There is one thing worth knowing though…

Japanese Anemones like to wander! 🌱😂🏃🏻‍♀️

They spread through underground rhizomes and, when they’re happy, can gradually form a lovely colony. That’s fantastic if you have an area you’d like them to fill, but give them a little room to roam — or divide them occasionally if they start getting too enthusiastic.

They look particularly gorgeous in cottage-style planting, wildlife gardens and naturalistic borders, mixed amongst grasses and other late-flowering perennials.

A beautiful, resilient plant that saves some of its best work until many others are finishing for the year. 🌸💛

The plants are fighting back !!!!!

Due to being hit on the head by a falling tree and sustaining stitches (nope, not a joke! 🥴), I will be on sick leave until further notice.

I’ll contact clients individually if this affects any upcoming bookings, but for now, Giardiniera is officially off duty.

🌿 GARDEN CLEARANCE — WORK IN PROGRESS 🌿

There’s something incredibly satisfying about uncovering a part of the garden that’s gradually been taken over by nature!

This is an ongoing clearance project, carefully working through the overgrowth, cutting back and removing unwanted foliage to open up this previously inaccessible part of the garden. 🌱

The aim at this stage is to clear and open up the area enough for my client to begin their own plans and work within the space — and already the original pathway and stone edging are becoming visible again.

There’s still more clearance to do, but that’s all part of the process. Sometimes garden work isn’t immediate and we can’t create the finished result straight away— it’s about reclaiming the space and giving someone a workable starting point for what they want to do next. ❤️

More progress to come on this one…

I only started gardening in June. I’m training in hedge trimming and pruning on the job and this client has entrusted me with a ‘safe space’ to develop and practice my hedge trimming skills. Which is unbelievably helpful and kind.

Only instructions I had were ‘We like circular’. And ‘Please don’t panic at all if it doesn’t go to plan.’ ❤️

Are they perfectly circular? No.
Are they pretty decent for third EVER lot of shrubs I’ve trimmed… YES!

Will they allow me to practice again in their garden? Absolutely yes !

Only way is up and I am eternally thankful for my wonderful clients who realise I am training on the job and entrust me with their gardens whilst I am learning.

I am working hard and I am learning hard 💪🏻

Back to finish in my next session with them soon. Then all their hedges and shrubs in that bed will be pretty close to circular ❤️

🌸 ONE FROM MY OWN BACK GARDEN 🌸

Dahlias… absolutely gorgeous, ridiculously rewarding and quite frankly, temperamental and somewhat ‘diva like’ little so and so’s. 😂

This year has been particularly tough on them. We’ve had difficult weather, lots of sunshine and watering challenges with the heatwave thrown into the mix — My dahlias have made their feelings about the whole situation very clear. Being stubborn to bloom is an understatement !!

There’s been feeding, watering, staking, deadheading, checking for pests, encouraging words, mild threats and probably far more attention than any plant has a right to expect.

But FINALLY… I’m reaping the rewards of all the care and attention I’ve given the little darlings !

And this Tangerine Dream beauty is from my own back garden. 🥰

This is why I love gardening. Sometimes you wait. Sometimes you swear. Sometimes you wonder why on earth you bother…

…and then something like this opens. ❤️

Worth it. Every single time.

Back to attacking the rockery.

This is all about reclaiming an overgrown garden and finding the garden hiding underneath! 💪🏻

I cleared a good few years of unwanted growth and weeds, uncovered the original beds and pathways, opened up the space around the established planting and began revealing the structure of this lovely garden again.

There’s still more work to be done — it is a garden renovation in progress — but just look at the difference already! 😍

I absolutely LOVE jobs like this. Sometimes time in the garden isn’t about adding more plants… it’s about uncovering what was there all along. 🌱

Adverse Weather & Cancellation Policy

Gardening is an outdoor job, so a little British weather is all part of the fun! 🌦️ Wherever possible, scheduled gardening visits will go ahead as planned.

However, occasionally weather conditions can make certain gardening work unsafe, impractical or potentially damaging to your garden.

🌧️ Rain & Waterlogged Ground

I will normally continue to work in light rain and showers.

Visits may need to be postponed, shortened or rearranged during heavy or persistent rain, particularly where the ground has become waterlogged and working could damage lawns, borders or soil structure.

💨 High Winds & Storms

Work may be postponed where strong winds, thunderstorms or other severe weather make gardening unsafe.

This is particularly important when using ladders, working around trees and branches, hedge cutting or using powered equipment.

❄️ Frost, Ice & Snow

Visits may be rearranged where icy or frozen conditions make working unsafe or where carrying out the planned work could damage plants, lawns or soil.

☀️ Extreme Heat

During periods of unusually high temperatures, visits may be shortened, rearranged or moved to a cooler part of the day where necessary for health and safety.

Certain gardening tasks may also be postponed if carrying them out during extreme heat could cause unnecessary stress or damage to plants.

📱 If I Need to Rearrange Your Visit

If weather conditions mean I cannot safely or appropriately carry out your planned work, I will contact you as soon as reasonably possible and arrange another suitable time.

There will, of course, be no cancellation charge where I make the decision to postpone a visit because of adverse weather.

📅 Client Cancellations

If you would prefer to cancel or rearrange a scheduled visit, please give me as much notice as possible.

🌱 Looking After You & Your Garden

I won’t cancel because of a little rain! ☔

However, I will always use my professional judgement when deciding whether conditions are suitable for the planned work. My priority is to work safely while protecting your plants, lawns, soil and garden.
