If you are hearing strange sounds at night, it probably means you have rodents. Generally, scratching at night means it's rats scratching in the morning means it's squirrels. You can still get rid of them but it usually requires a licensed pesticide applicator to physically remove them.

A few tips on how to keep rats and other rodents away:

Keep them out – a rat can wiggle through a hole the size of a 10 pence piece, so make sure that any holes in your walls are filled.

Limit outdoor feeding of pets and birds. Any outdoor food can attract rodents.If possible, keep vegetation at least 18 inches from the outside walls of your home. Groundcovers like monkey grass, Asian jasmine and various forms of ivy make ideal habitats for rodents.
