It’s been a stunning morning here in south Northants! We’ve been soaking up the late September sunshine and getting our final pre-October jobs ticked off the list.
If you have an hour to spare this week, here are 8 quick jobs to get stuck into before the first frosts hit:
✂️ Tidy the herb garden to keep things neat for autumn.
🍅 Prune tomatoes — strip new shoots, old leaves, and remaining flowering stems so energy goes into ripening existing fruit.
🪴 Empty summer pots that have gone over straight onto the beds.
🥕 Harvest the last of the veggies while they’re at their best.
🌸 Deadhead flowers and save seeds to plant for next season.
🌱 Pot on August cuttings to give them room to establish.
🌱 Pot on your largest seedlings before growth slows down.
🌹 Enjoy the little moments — like catching the gorgeous morning raindrops on the roses!
What’s been on your garden to-do list today? 💚

One of the questions I get asked most is: what do I plant in my shady border?
Just because a spot doesn’t get full sun doesn’t mean it can’t be vibrant, lush, and full of life! Here are 10 of my absolute favourite shade-loving plants to help you bring those darker corners to life (save this post for future reference!):
🌸 Top 10 Shade Lovers:
1. Foxgloves – Classic vertical drama and beautiful bell blooms.
2. Perennial Geranium – Tough, reliable groundcover with non-stop colour.
3. Astilbes – Feathery plumes that glow in dappled light.
4. Astrantia – Intricate, star-like flowers that pollinators love.
5. Tiarella (Foamflower) – Stunning foliage and delicate, fluffy blooms.
6. Hydrangea – Bold, showstopping blooms that thrive in part shade.
7. Japanese Anemone – Late-season blooms that brighten up late summer and autumn.
8. Heuchera – Year-round foliage in incredible rich jewel tones.
9. Camellia – Glossy evergreen leaves and lush early-season flowers.
10. Rhododendron – Magnificent springtime color for acid-loving soil.
Which of these is already in your garden, or which one are you adding next? Let me know below! 👇
