ON YOUR (MY) BIKE!

Well, it’s been just over seven months since I started using Facebook in an effort to advertise my Handyman services to Shepshed and the surrounding towns and villages.

The support I have had has been absolutely amazing and I would like to wholeheartedly thank every single person who has given me work, recommended me to others, asked me questions (some more challenging than others 🙂) or commented on my posts.

It is thanks to all you wonderful people, and the support and interest you have shown, that I have been really busy all this time, after a very quiet Christmas and New Year!

Much as I enjoy my work, and I really do, those seven months have been really full on and it’s time for me to take a (hopefully well earned!) holiday.

So, at 4 pm this Friday, September 11th, I’m closing the “office“ before heading off on Sunday with a few mates to tour Europe on our motorbikes, returning to work on Monday the 28th of September.

Now, I won’t try and insult your intelligence by saying that phone reception will be poor and I won’t be able to respond to enquiries while I’m away. You’re not daft 😃. Reception in Europe will generally be perfectly good and we both know that…

The truth is I need to recharge my batteries, as does everyone, so between the above dates, I have decided to throw myself into enjoying the trip completely, without any work distractions. Isn’t that what holidays are for?

Therefore, I hope you will understand that I will not be posting, emailing, texting, taking calls or doing anything at all related to work during my holiday.

If you do reach out to me between the 13th and the 27th , please don’t expect any sort of reply until after Monday the 28th Sept and even then it may take a day or 2 to get back to you, depending on the backlog I have to work through!

Assuming all goes well on the trip, I’ll be back online, as usual around the end of September, beginning of October.

DON’T TELL THE WIFE!

For years now, whenever it springs to her mind - normally while watching a home improvement programme on the telly - my wife has said she would like radiator covers in our home.

I have never really been a fan, and am more than a bit convinced that they would just end up giving more storage area where she can put “stuff “!

So, somehow I have managed to keep putting her off the idea for all this time…

However, recently I was asked to build one by a repeat customer and I must confess that when I stepped back, I had to admit it is a far more elegant solution than a bare, white radiator.

I’m not going to bring the subject up, because that’s like admitting I was wrong 😊, but if she asks me again, this time I’ll probably say, “Okay, go on then!”…..

Have you ever been really “anti” something, only to find you change your mind about it over time, or after a closer look?

SOMETIMES A RELATIVELY SIMPLE CHANGE CAN HAVE A LARGE IMPACT ON A ROOM

A good customer of mine has recently had much of her house redecorated by a professional painter and decorator. He did a lovely job, but my customer felt even more could be done to create the impact that she was after.

This is when she began to have me change sockets, light switches, light fittings et cetera, a bit at a time, as budget allowed.

Below are a couple of examples of where I have swapped out the normal white plastic fixings, for something slightly more visually appealing. The cost of doing this is not great, but hopefully you’ll agree that the impact of the change is quite striking.

Do you have any examples of where a relatively small/simple/cheap change within your home has had a really big positive visual impact, that you’d care to share?

HOW LUCKY WAS I?

Driving home after doing a few jobs in Castle Donington, I turned down the Diseworth Road and saw something I’ve never seen before and probably never will again.

There, perched casually on a road sign was a magnificent bird of prey.

I stopped at the car, backed up a bit (it’s electric so no engine noise to disturb it) and manage to take this photo. It just sat there looking at me as if to say “what are you messing at human?”.

It certainly didn’t seem bothered by my presence, so I just drove off quietly and left it in peace.

AI had a look at the photograph and said it’s a kestrel, and I don’t know enough about birds of prey to be sure if that is correct or not.

If you know for sure what it is, please comment below as I’d love to know.

DETERMINED NOT TO HAVE A STAIR LIFT, BUT FINDING STAIRS A BIT OF A STRUGGLE?

This is the situation that one of my customers found himself in, as he has become increasingly unsteady on his feet. Going up the stairs wasn’t too bad, but coming back down was a bit nerve racking with only one handrail.

The solution was a sturdy banister, fixed solidly to the wall. He now has two things to hold onto while coming down the stairs and told me he feels far more confident and in control.

So that was an easy and quite elegant solution that will hopefully prevent my customer from falling down the stairs and hurting himself.

Do you find yourself doing something that makes you think, “…..this is a bit dodgy!“, but you keep doing it anyway, without putting a solution in place? Or maybe you don’t know what the solution may be.

SINATRA** HAD THE “RAT PACK”, I’VE GOT “FLAT PACK”…

Furniture that needs assembly can be a daunting proposition and, if you’re not careful, it’s all too easy to put a panel in upside down or back to front, or to over-tighten the fixings so the wood chipboard splits and will no longer hold. Ask me how I know🫣. But I learned from my mistakes…..

However, if you approach it in a systematic manner, reading the instructions thoroughly (maybe more than once) and laying out all the components to check they are all there, it should be okay. I find that works for me, anyway.

Here are a couple of photos of my latest projects for a customer; the small bed was from IKEA (Malm), the other was from another company, but the principle is the same.

How do you find building flat pack? Straightforward or a nightmare? Do you have any tips or failure stories you might care to share with me and other members?

** For those lucky people who are too young to know, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and a couple of other guys were in a “gang” that wore tuxedos, drank martinis, and exuded pure mid-century cool in 1960’s Las Vegas, with rumours of links to the “mob”. So now you know!
