๐งโ๐พWe wanted to share a few foraging tips at this time of year, when the land has an abundance of fruits, berries, herbs, and the occasional fungus.
๐ซ There are so many benefits - mental, physical, and financial - it's a fun way to get out in the wild and grab yourself some delicious fresh food! This is the haul that our director, Andy, and wife, Tanya, collected from a stroll around a clients' on Sunday.
๐ There are always fruits for beginners like the apples and rosehips (just don't get the windfalls from the floor.) And so many books or online resources to help. They didn't know how to check whether the giant puffballs are safe to eat, but could check before picking them.
๐โ๐ซ Turns out, if the inside is white, peel them and use them like you would any mushroom. They made veggie mince for lasagne with the big one (seasoned with the foraged oregano sprigs), and battered buffalo wings with the little one! ๐
๐ถ Not only that, they made an elderberry and ginger elixir with the elderberries, and plan to make hedgerow gin with the sloes and blackberries. So much tasty food for free, from a nice walk to help the mental health as the days get shorter! ๐ฆ๏ธ
๐ฟ So grab your phone and a foraging guide, get out of Sainsbury's, and wade into some hedges (with the landowner's permission!) But remember to only take what you need and leave some for the birds (and dragonflies!!) ๐ฆ๐ฆโโฌ
