Transforming family living | Seaford

This project involved a single-storey rear extension and extensive internal reconfiguration, creating a bright, contemporary open-plan kitchen, dining and family space designed around modern living.

A key feature of the design is the abundance of natural light. Large triple sliding doors open the living space onto the garden, while a series of Velux rooflights flood the extension with daylight, creating a seamless connection between inside and out.

As part of the brief, we also extended the former utility area to provide a ground floor shower room, helping to futureproof the property and provide greater flexibility for the homeowners in years to come. A large GlazingVision rooflight brings additional natural light deep into the centre of the home.

The result is a home that feels significantly larger, lighter and better connected, while remaining sympathetic to the character of the original property.

If you're considering extending or remodelling your home, we'd be delighted to discuss how thoughtful design can transform the way you live.

A Strategic Approach to Unlocking Development Potential | East Sussex

Sometimes, the best planning solutions are achieved through careful long-term thinking rather than a single planning application. For this project, we developed a phased planning strategy that would maximise the site's potential while remaining sympathetic to the character of the existing property.

Phase One involved relocating the existing garage to the front of the site, incorporating a generous home office and shower room. Every aspect of the design was carefully considered to complement the architecture of the main dwelling, with matching brickwork, roof materials, proportions and detailing helping the new building sit naturally within its surroundings.

By successfully securing planning permission for the replacement garage, we unlocked the opportunity for Phase Two—the redevelopment of the former garage site.

We'll share more about that exciting next stage in a future post...

Strategic thinking at the earliest stages of a project can often create opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked. By considering the wider potential of a site, we can help clients unlock additional value while ensuring proposals remain well-designed and responsive to their surroundings.

Project Update | Loft Conversion & Home Transformation in Seaford

Our Seaford loft conversion has reached another exciting milestone, with the external appearance now really taking shape.

Since our last update, the new roof has been completed, the front and rear dormers have been fully formed, and the striking western red cedar timber-clad front gable has been installed, creating a contemporary focal point while complementing the surrounding brickwork and roof finishes.

This project extends far beyond a traditional loft conversion. The internal layout has been completely reconfigured, including a redesigned entrance staircase that improves circulation throughout the home.

The new loft accommodation provides two generous bedrooms and a spacious en-suite bathroom, while the front and rear dormers maximise usable floor space, natural daylight and outward views.

To the rear, the dormers create bright, well-proportioned rooms with attractive views across the property's mature garden, providing a much stronger connection between the new living spaces and the landscape beyond.

It's always rewarding to see months of planning and detailed design materialise on site.

Designed to belong | Seaford

This project involved the design of a substantial side extension, creating a spacious new utility room and an open-plan dining/garden room that has completely transformed the way our clients use their home.

From the outset, our design philosophy was simple: the extension should feel as though it had always been part of the original house.

By carefully matching the roof form, brickwork, materials, window proportions and architectural detailing, we created an extension that sits naturally alongside the existing property rather than competing with it. The result is a seamless addition that enhances both the appearance and functionality of the home.

Good residential design isn't always about creating something bold. Sometimes, the greatest success is when an extension feels so well integrated that it's difficult to tell where the original house ends and the new begins.

If you're considering extending your home, we'd be delighted to help you unlock its potential with a design that's both practical and sympathetic to its surroundings.

Stepping Inside a Grade I Listed Regency Home | Brunswick Square, Hove

Following our recent introduction to this remarkable heritage project, we'd like to share a glimpse inside one of Brunswick Square's exceptional Grade I listed homes.

Built between 1824 and 1828, Brunswick Square is widely regarded as one of Britain's finest examples of Regency architecture.

Designed as part of an ambitious seaside development, the square was created to attract fashionable society to the Sussex coast and remains one of Hove's most significant historic townscapes. Today, its architectural and historic importance is recognised through its Grade I listing, a designation reserved for buildings of exceptional national interest.

The interior of this property retains many of its original architectural features, including an impressive cantilevered entrance staircase, elegant radial bay window overlooking the rear garden, and a beautifully detailed historic fireplace within the magnificent former ballroom.

These features are far more than decorative details, they form part of the building's historic significance and help tell the story of over 200 years of architectural craftsmanship. Every element requires careful consideration when preparing a Listed Building Consent application, ensuring that any proposed alterations respect and preserve the character that makes this building so special.

As Chartered Architectural Technologists, projects such as these require a balance of technical knowledge, conservation principles and sensitive design. It's a privilege to play a part in helping safeguard these important historic buildings while ensuring they continue to meet the needs of modern living.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about the carefully considered proposals that have been developed for this exceptional property.

Designed to embrace the landscape | Seaford

Today we're returning to one of our Seaford projects, where the brief was to create two contemporary rear extensions that would transform the way the home connected with its exceptional surroundings.

Situated on a stunning 1.43-acre plot adjacent to the South Downs National Park, the bungalow enjoys beautiful open views across the surrounding landscape. Our design sought to maximise these views while creating bright, generous spaces filled with natural light.

The first extension forms a dramatic new living room, featuring a double-height vaulted ceiling with five Velux rooflights and expansive sliding doors opening directly onto the garden. The combination of the vaulted ceiling, exposed timber trusses and extensive glazing creates a light-filled space that draws the landscape into the heart of the home.

The second extension delivers a luxurious principal bedroom suite, complete with a spacious bedroom, dressing room and en-suite bathroom, all achieved through a combination of a new extension and thoughtful internal remodelling. Three rooflights and large sliding doors flood the bedroom with daylight while framing uninterrupted views across the gardens and countryside beyond.

To further enhance the quality of the internal spaces, sun tunnels were introduced within the hallway, bringing natural daylight into the centre of the home and reducing the need for artificial lighting throughout the day.

Projects like this demonstrate how carefully considered architectural design can transform not only the way a home functions, but also how it connects with its setting. By maximising light, space and views, the extensions have created a home that fully embraces its remarkable location.

If you're looking to extend or remodel your home, we'd be delighted to discuss how thoughtful design can help unlock the full potential of your property.

Restoring a Historic Landmark | Victorian Almshouse | Seaford

Some of the most rewarding projects are those that help restore a building's historic character for future generations.

This Grade II Listed Victorian Almshouse in Seaford had, over time, lost one of its original chimney stacks following persistent water ingress issues. Although necessary at the time, its removal left a noticeable gap in the building's historic roofscape.

The Trustees wished to reinstate the chimney as faithfully as possible, restoring the original appearance while ensuring it would perform reliably for many years to come. Using historic photographs and careful on-site investigation, we meticulously recreated the original chimney, paying close attention to every architectural detail.

Our drawings included the setting out of each chimney shaft, decorative brickwork, corbelled courses, lead flashings and soakers, proportions and construction detailing to ensure the replacement reflected the craftsmanship of the original Victorian design.

The completed chimney now sits seamlessly within the historic roofscape, preserving the architectural rhythm of the Almshouse and reinstating an important element of the building's identity.

Projects like this demonstrate that successful conservation isn't about creating something new, it's about understanding what was there before and ensuring any intervention respects the significance of the original building.

We're proud to have helped the Trustees safeguard another small piece of Seaford's architectural heritage.
