NRS Dounreay was delighted to welcome the MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, David Green, for a visit this week. David had a tour of the Dounreay site, met the emergency arrangements team and heard firsthand about the challenges of dealing with one of the biggest decommissioning programmes in Europe, the Shaft and Silo. A presentation on the socio-economic impact demonstrated the opportunities and the benefits to the local community, and he also met with local trade union representatives. We would like to thank David for taking the time to visit and look forward to welcoming him back in the future!

A bake sale was held on the NRS Dounreay site during Baby Loss Awareness Week 2026 which has raised vital funds and awareness for Vilomah.

Vilomah is a local baby loss charity supporting bereaved parents across Caithness and Sutherland. The event was a fantastic success, with lots of delicious treats on offer.

The bake sale raised an amazing £1,152, which will help Vilomah provide support groups and remembrance events for families across Caithness and Sutherland.

The Dounreay Employees Charity Fund has also generously agreed to donate £1,000, bringing the total raised to a staggering £2,152.

Today, Hinkley Point B officially becomes part of Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS), marking an important milestone in the UK's nuclear decommissioning programme.

Having completed its electricity-generating mission with EDF, the site is now moving into decommissioning. As the UK's specialist nuclear decommissioning organisation, NRS will draw on decades of experience to safely manage the site's next phase, while supporting skilled jobs in the region.

This transfer is the result of close collaboration between the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority group, EDF, Government, the Nuclear Liabilities Fund and regulators, all working together to achieve a safe and successful handover.

Following Hunterston B's transfer earlier this year, this is another significant step in delivering the UK's long-term nuclear decommissioning mission.

Welcome to our new colleagues at Hinkley Point B – we’re delighted to have you with us.

The Dounreay Employees’ Charity Fund (DECF) was established over 40 years ago with the objective of making donations to organisations and charities that benefit the local communities of Caithness and north Sutherland.

NRS Dounreay employees can opt to donate a minimum of £2 per month direct from their salary to top up the fund which local groups can apply to.

The DECF has also benefited from the money made from the sale of the latest Dounreay book, The Atomics; the story of Dounreay’s people. Book sales have so far made over £15,000 for the charity fund, which is a bumper boost towards supporting worthy causes in the area.

We recently hosted a visit of six representatives from Japanese universities specialising in environmental economics, environmental and energy policy, and environmental law who were staying in the area as part of an academic field study.

The group wanted an opportunity to hear about the current status and future challenges of decommissioning, as well as Dounreay's relationship and engagement with the local community. Magnus Davidson, NRS Dounreay’s Socio Economics Manager hosted the session followed by a group discussion.
