These borders were infested with ground elder so it was the perfect excuse to refresh the planting! It took six months or so to dig out all of the ground elder roots but three years on it’s doing well. Staying vigilant though! 🙂

It all started with a teeny Acer palmatum ‘Atropurureum’ back in 2020. I selected trees, roses, shrubs and perennials that would look gorgeous with the red foliage throughout the year from Primula ‘Wanda’ in early spring to Rudbeckia and Hesperantha in the autumn. Other key players pictured include Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’, Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’, Helenium ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ and Iris Sibirica (unknown cultivar). The roses include Rosa ‘The Fairy’ and Flower Carpet Scarlet. The purple rhododendron is ‘Monsieur Marcel Menard’. 🌸

Transformation well on the way in less than 12 months! The plan included a new seeded lawn with 3 silver birch trees. Planting included a shrubby border with roses and perennial companions. Plus a flowerbed for cutting. (The cosmos in the vase pictured - ‘Apricotta’ and ‘Xsenia’ were grown from seed by ❤️)

What has worked so well here is the way the plants on both sides of the artwork are mingling with each other so beautifully. Key players right now are - Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’, Salvia ‘Amistad’, Erigeron karvinskianus, Rosa ‘Kew Gardens’ Stipa gigantea and Hakonechloa macra. ❤️ Barbara Cheshire

This lovely client wanted an extended season of colour in their borders. Perennials that partner well with their existing plants were chosen. Many flower well into late autumn. 🍁 I have posted some of my favourite combos. 😍
