A permit to work is only as good as the planning behind it

A permit to work is an important tool for controlling higher-risk activities.

It should clearly communicate what work is authorised, the equipment or area involved, the hazards, precautions, isolations and responsibilities.

But a permit is not a substitute for a risk assessment, competent people or effective supervision.

Its value comes from the quality of the planning and the behaviours that support it.

Before work begins, everyone involved should understand exactly what is being done, what the risks are and where their responsibilities begin and end.

Isolation Is More Than Opening a Disconnect

Effective electrical isolation is a critical part of reducing risk before work begins.

A reliable isolation process should consider all potential energy sources, including generators, photovoltaic systems, stored energy, back feeds, control circuits and interconnected equipment.

It also requires clear labelling, documented procedures, suitable testing and properly maintained isolation points.

Opening a device is one thing.

Confirming that equipment is de-energised and cannot be unintentionally re-energised is another.

A safe system of work should clearly define the task, the hazards, responsibilities, required controls, competence and what should happen if conditions change.

City & Guilds 2382-26: Level 3 Award in Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671: 2018+A4:2026

In April 2026 BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was introduced, replacing the previous version of the IET Wiring Regulations. From 15th October 2026 all electrical design, installation and inspection and testing work must comply with the latest version of the British Standard.

This qualification is primarily aimed at practising electricians with relevant experience and other allied professionals e.g. surveyors, consultants and other trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of the IET Regulations.

Electrical Safety Should Be Designed In, Not Added Later

When designing a new industrial electrical system, Arc Flash shouldn't be something considered once construction is complete.

An early Arc Flash Study can help influence fundamental design decisions, including equipment selection, protection settings, room layouts, cable routes and system configuration.

This provides an opportunity to reduce electrical risk before equipment is installed, rather than trying to resolve problems when options are limited and changes are more expensive.

For heavy industrial facilities, safety, reliability and maintainability need to be considered from the very beginning.
