Take a look at these photos. This is the inside of a Vaillant ecoTEC combination boiler that I recently removed.
This customer paid hard-earned money for a service contract with a huge, household-name nationwide company. Year after year, their engineers came out. Eventually, they told the customer the boiler had "ongoing problems" and tried to push them into a massive, expensive replacement.

Look at that heavy debris, combustion scaling, and severe lack of maintenance inside the main heat exchanger.
If this boiler had been serviced properly and thoroughly according to manufacturer instructions—rather than just getting a quick visual check and a ticket signed off by an engineer rushing to their next slot—it might still be running perfectly today.
