🔐 20-Year-Old Sliding Patio Door — Modern Hook Lock Retrofit | Gillingham

A slightly different job for Long’s Locks LTD in Gillingham — bringing an approximately 20-year-old sliding patio door up to date with a modern hook-locking system.

This was far from a straightforward lock replacement. The original door simply wasn’t designed to accommodate a modern locking mechanism, so the installation required a fair amount of modification and fabrication.

🛠️ The work involved:

• Carefully cutting a new recess into the existing door to accommodate the modern hook-lock mechanism
• Installing and aligning the new locking mechanism
• Installing and correctly positioning the new keep
• Cutting and modifying the existing weather bar attached to the end of the patio door to accommodate the new setup
• Removing the original through-bolted handles
• Measuring and fitting aluminium plates to cover the original handle aperture and provide a suitable mounting point for the new hardware
• Spraying the aluminium plates white at the customer’s request, keeping the finished installation in line with the existing white door
• Installing a new euro-profile cylinder
• Installing new handles
• Final alignment, adjustment and testing to ensure everything operated smoothly and locked securely

The end result is a 20-year-old patio door successfully retrofitted with a modern locking system, while retaining the existing door and keeping the finished installation sympathetic to its original appearance.

This is exactly the sort of job where locksmithing becomes more than simply changing a lock. Sometimes there isn’t an off-the-shelf solution — you have to work with what’s already there, adapt it and create one.

🔐 Another property made safer and more secure.

Yesterday’s job involved installing window restrictors to improve safety and provide controlled ventilation, along with realigning several door handles to restore smooth operation and reliable closing.

At Long’s Locks LTD, we believe that security hardware should do more than just look the part—it should function correctly, comply with good installation practices and give you confidence that your property is properly protected.

Whether you need security upgrades, lock replacements, door adjustments or remedial work to correct previous installations, we’re here to help.

Another happy customer in Dartford! 🔐

Today we replaced a worn euro cylinder and carried out adjustments to the uPVC door to improve the alignment, ensuring the door locks and operates smoothly once again.

A lock is only as good as the door it’s fitted to. Misaligned doors can cause unnecessary wear on locks, make locking difficult, and compromise security. Taking the time to correctly align the door helps extend the life of the lock and keeps your property secure.

If your uPVC door is difficult to lock, sticking, or needs a lock replacement, Long’s Locks LTD is here to help.
