If you don’t want your lawn turning into Weetabix in summer and a swamp in winter… aeration helps. 🌱

It relieves compacted soil, improves drainage and helps air, water and nutrients reach the roots.

I’m using a hollow-tine aerator to remove little plugs of soil, but a garden fork can do the job too.

Next up: reseeding and an autumn feed 👀

Not once did I put a hose on this lawn all summer. Not once. 👀

It went crispy, it went brown, it looked absolutely finished… and now look at it.

That’s the benefit of building a healthy lawn over time. All the work I’ve done over the years with feeding, aerating, overseeding and general maintenance means it can take a battering and still bounce back when the weather turns.

Early autumn is also a brilliant time to get on top of weeds. The ground is softer, they’re easier to pull and getting the whole root out now means fewer unwanted guests hanging around next year.

Then it’s scarification time.

Scarifying removes the layer of dead grass, moss and thatch sitting around the base of your lawn. I work over the lawn in passes, pulling all that rubbish out so air, water and nutrients can actually get down into the soil.

And yes… it will look worse before it looks better. 😂

Think of it as a lawn glow-up with a slightly aggressive first step.

Nothing glamorous here… just me getting home after shift and putting the kitchen to bed.

There’s something weirdly satisfying about going to bed knowing the house is clean…

Deadheading dahlias,
One little mistake and you could be snipping off your next flower instead of the old one. Round and firm = leave it. Pointed and spent = off with its head.

Apparently even the trees have had enough of this summer.

Early leaf drop can be a sign of heat and drought stress, so if your garden is looking suspiciously autumnal already, it doesn’t necessarily mean the seasons have completely lost the plot.

A good excuse to be a little less tidy too fallen leaves can do a lot more good left around borders than shoved straight into a green bin.

Clean the house, sort myself out, head to the station… and somehow convince my body that being awake all night is completely normal.
