Me on the Quiet Mark podcast!

・・・
Ep.8 - The Quiet Mark Podcast - Out Now: Link in Bio.

Building and construction are responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions in the world. Air traffic, road traffic and construction are 3 of the biggest sources of noise pollution.

Does it have to be this way? One man who believes construction could be quieter and more sustainable, and whose company is determined to make it so, is Mike Jacob; guest on Ep.8 of The Quiet Mark Podcast.

A wave of silence spread across the planet as man-made noise fell by 50% during lockdown. Does a return to normality have to bring with it a return to pre-lockdown volumes?

Air traffic has reduced with more global business meetings taking place on Zoom. With companies like Google telling employees to stay home until summer '21 and Twitter employees working from home indefinitely, comes a significant reduction in road traffic.

But what about building and construction noise? The number of new homes registered to be built per annum in the UK has risen by more than 80 per cent over the last decade.

Mike discusses this and more with our host, Simon Gosling, explaining the path that lead to Kiss House and their work to disrupt the future of construction, transforming the lives of occupants, for the better.

Happy to share this interview I recently recorded for the Quiet Mark podcast — it was great to reflect on all we've been doing and why.

Enjoy! Thanks, Mike

One of my past projects.

The Old Water Tower.

4-bedroom house.
Past project.

Shortlisted, RIBA Awards 2016
Commended, RICS Awards 2016
Shortlisted, Passivhaus Awards 2016
Shortlisted, Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2016
Shortlisted, Structural Timber Awards 2016

We love to do things differently and the Old Water Tower offered a great opportunity to do so. The project team worked highly collaboratively with an ‘open book’ approach to pricing. Here, contractors agree on costs and margin at the start. It worked to everyone’s advantage as the project was an experiment to test Passivhaus in a development context.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The site previously housed a utilities building, which was demolished to build The Old Water Tower.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was a small plot at the end of a short lane and was positioned behind a row of houses, so the design had to rise to meet these challenges.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The end result was a perfectly formed certified Passivhaus designed to echo the local vernacular by hinting at barns and other farm buildings.

The RIBA 2020 election voting starts today. My colleagues at Kiss House spoke to presidential hopeful Sumita Singha.

Have a read — she's an inspirational deep green sustainability advocate, academic and humanitarian who offers great hope for the future of architecture and the built environment.

Read our interview with award winning architect, author and humanitarian Sumita Singha as we ask about her career and suitability to lead the RIBA.

A few weeks ago whilst on the Kiss House Twitter account I came across a video telling the story of Sumita Singha and explaining why she should become the new president of the RIBA. I was immediately struck by her resilience and passion, and couldn’t help but be impressed by her many achievements in architecture, sustainability and the charity sector.

The 2 minute video takes us from her humble beginnings in Delhi, India, through a life of service and dedication to driving positive change and inclusion.

At a time when the existential threat of climate change looms ever larger and enormous social challenges are being hastened by the fallout from the Covid19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement, I felt buoyed by the potential for change personified by this inspirational woman who is clearly a force of nature.
