I am officially recharging my batteries! 🔋

After an incredibly busy summer filled with non-stop long days and long hours, I am taking a brief, well-deserved break to rest and reset with family and friends. I put absolutely everything into my last project to ensure the high standards of JCN Decorating & Maintenance were fully delivered before stepping away.

I will be diving right back into action on Wednesday 28th October for my next booked-in job.

🛠️ The anatomy of a high-end restoration. (And why proper prep is everything).

This hallway, stairs, and landing have just been handed back to a local client, and to say the results are rewarding is an understatement.

This wasn't a standard "freshen up"—this was a full-scale, ground-up restoration that required every bit of trade know-how JCN Decorating and Maintenance has to offer.

When you strip back a character property, you always find surprises. Plenty of structural and surface issues popped up along the way, but a professional doesn’t slap filler over a problem and walk away. Every single obstacle was overcome properly to guarantee a flawless finish.

Here is the exact breakdown of the professional trade details that went into achieving this premium standard:

➡️ Phase 1: Carpentry & Structural Alignment

• The Rip-Out: Woodwork completely removed to get right back to the bones of the building.

• The Rebuild: Full re-plaster throughout to correct settlement movement and eliminate decades of uneven walls.

• Framing: Door frames meticulously built out to ensure absolute vertical alignment and symmetry.

• Heritage Matching: Choice pieces of original woodwork were carefully salvaged and restored, while new architraves and picture rails were sourced and installed to perfectly mirror the original character.

➡️ Phase 2: Surface Preparation & Timber Stabilisation

• Resin Repairs: Advanced, trade-grade resin work used to consolidate and rebuild damaged, historic timber.

• Substrate Flattening:
Hours upon hours of relentless filing, hand-sanding, and mechanical dust-extracted sanding to get the woodwork completely flat. If it doesn't feel like glass, it’s not ready for paint.

➡️ Phase 3: The Premium Coating System

• The Woodwork: Four complete coats of paint to build up a deep, durable, and solid finish.

• The Canvas: Two solid coats on the walls and ceilings to lock in the depth of colour and finish consistency.

I am incredibly proud of the final finish on this project. A massive thank you goes out to the customer for their patience and for having us there longer than originally expected. To reach an end goal like this—with a finish that truly speaks for itself—the extra hours, love, care, and absolute attention to detail simply have to be put in.

This job has been massive and still ongoing but I'm close to finishing it off, the final 1st coat of the woodwork on the spindles, base and handrails, followed by the 2nd coat to all to finish it off. Last sand down and coats needed for the ceiling and walls followed by the two top coats on the walls.

This recent project could have been finished in half the time, but our customer chose our Gold Standard finish. That means deeper preparation, meticulous attention to detail, and a flawless final look.

We ran into a few unforeseen setbacks along the way—but there is nothing our team can’t handle and rectify. We never cut corners, because your house matters and our finish matters.

What's your go to paint for internal woodwork??? 🖌️🫟

I'm finally getting some paint on this mammoth hall stairs and landing restoration 🙌 the prep days have been long but the finish will be worth it!

After years of using oil based I've only switched over in the last year or so to acrylic based, after much trial and error johnstones_trade aquagard primer undercoat and durable satin top coat has become my favourite and go to paint to work with 👌.

Can't wait to get the final photos posted on completion 👀😁.

We strictly enforce this window because outdoor painting requires consistently warm, dry weather and low humidity. Applying exterior paint too early in the year leads to trapped moisture, poor adhesion, and premature peeling. Waiting for the right seasonal conditions ensures your exterior paint cures perfectly and protects your home for years to come.
