Topping out on the hill, slaying ponticum!, today's factoid- it is very rare to find a birds nest in rhododendron ponticum, when you do it doesn't look ' successful ', no droppings, egg remnants, nothing at all.., A mature oak tree will host up to 500 different invertebrates under its canopy, R-ponticum hosts zero, no worms, mites, or any form of insect life, the soil underneath a ponticum is devoid of any life, it is the worst possible tree for healthy vibrant bird populations, R-ponticum produces it's own fungi which allows it to extract every last nutrient in the soil, it doesn't poison the soil it takes the life from it by it's unique growth attributes. This is one of the many reasons we love eradicating it ! Happy days!
