Another neat and practical job completed ✔️
We installed an extra double socket inside a cupboard so the client could plug in their broadband equipment out of sight and keep everything tidy.
✔️ New dedicated circuit installed
✔️ Protected by a 16amp RCBO
✔️ Wired in 2.5mm cable, neatly run in mini trunking
✔️ Finished into a surface-mounted double back box
The client didn’t want the mess of chasing out walls, so this surface and conduit setup was the perfect solution — clean, efficient, and ideal for cupboard installations.

Why it’s important to use a registered electrician 🔌

When it comes to electrics in your home, safety really isn’t something to take chances with.

Many people don’t realise that some electrical work in the home is against the law to carry out yourself under Part P of the Building Regulations. This is because poor or unsafe electrical work is a major cause of house fires, electric shock, and serious injury.

Certain jobs must legally be carried out and certified by a registered electrician, or notified to Building Control, including:

Consumer unit (fuse board) replacements

New circuits

Work in special locations such as bathrooms

Significant alterations or additions

Using a NICEIC registered electrician means the work is:

✔️ Compliant with BS 7671 wiring regulations
✔️ Covered by insurance and warranty schemes
✔️ Legally compliant for future house sales and insurance

Why the hallway two-way lighting wasn’t working

The customer asked why their two-way hallway lighting had stopped working and whether I could identify the issue and advise on a solution.

To the untrained eye, everything may look more or less acceptable. However, to a qualified electrician, the fault is immediately obvious.

In this case, the wiring behind the switch is incorrect and unsafe. There is a mix of old cable colours, conductors being used for purposes they are not clearly identified for, and inadequate termination of protective earth conductors. This not only explains why the two-way switching has failed, but also presents a real safety risk.

Poor or incorrect connections like this can lead to:

Lights not working or behaving unpredictably

Overheating at terminals

Increased risk of electric shock

Potential fire hazards hidden behind the wall

This is a classic example of why DIY electrical work is dangerous. Electricity doesn’t give second chances — mistakes can seriously injure or kill, or cause a fire long after the work appears “finished”.

For peace of mind and to keep your home safe, electrical work should always be carried out by a competent, experienced electrician who understands current wiring regulations and safe installation practices.

A nice little job in Plympton today. The customer wanted an extra socket on the opposite side of their lounge to power an ornament and some USB lights, so I supplied and installed a new double socket with built-in USB-A and USB-C ports.

Clean, tidy and no damage to décor — just a smart upgrade that keeps everything powered without messy extension leads.
