“What is the purpose of garden design”
In my opinion a well-designed garden not only adds to your all year round enjoyment of your home's outdoor space, but also adds value which helps it become more saleable.

Porcelain patio project

First, measure and mark the patio area. For a 25 m² patio, the exact shape determines the perimeter and number of cuts required. Levels should be established so rainwater drains away from the house. For a quality installation, the ground preparation and drainage are just as important as the porcelain itself.

The existing soil, grass or old paving is removed to the required depth the excavation needs to allow for the finished porcelain. A suitable MOT Type 1 sub-base is installed and compacted in layers. mortar bedding is installed over the prepared sub-base. The porcelain slabs are carefully positioned and bonded using full mortar beds & the correct priming slurry. We used lovely charcoal edging blocks to finish it off around the perimeter, we even installed a BBQ canopy! At MD Garden Design we cut no corners no project is complete until the client is satisfied with the results.

Small Drystone d**e repair

Cement is generally a poor choice for repairing a dry stone wall because it changes how the wall works. A dry stone wall is designed to remain stable through the weight and careful interlocking of its stones, allowing it to move slightly with the ground and weather.

1. Take down the damaged section
Carefully dismantle the unstable part until you reach solid, stable wall.
Sort stones by size: large foundation stones, building stones, through stones (long stones), and coping stones.
2. Prepare the foundation
Remove loose soil and vegetation.
If the original foundation is sound, reuse it. If not, create a firm, level base using the largest stones.
3. Rebuild both faces together
Place the largest stones at the bottom.
Keep each face leaning slightly inward (known as the “batter”).
Fill the centre with tightly packed hearting stones—small stones that prevent movement.
4. Overlap joints
Avoid continuous vertical joints.
Each stone should bridge the joints below, much like brickwork.
5. Install through stones
Every 600–900 mm (2–3 ft) in height, place long stones that extend from one face well into the wall or across its full width if possible.
These tie the two faces together.
6. Finish with coping stones
Place the largest coping stones securely along the top.
They lock the wall together and help shed water.

Common mistakes to avoid

Building one face before the other.
Using round stones on the outer face where they can roll.
Leaving loose hearting.
Creating long vertical joints.
Making the wall too vertical instead of giving it the correct inward batter.

Drystone wall project.

Dry stone walls are structures built entirely from stones—without mortar, cement, or any binding material. Instead, they rely on careful placement, gravity, and friction to stay stable, a technique that has been used for thousands of years across the world.

This was my 4th drystone walling project. I took a course last year with DSWA to complete which qualifies me to build farm drystone walls and garden drystone walls. Was a great learning opportunity to gain some new skills.

Had to strip back further than expected because of damage & crumbling in areas this one was time consuming but worth the patience to see the end results. Not perfect. (nothing Is in this world)
I’m sure professionals will find some mistakes. It’s solid & client is very happy with the end result that’s all that matters.
