Weeds popping up in your block paving this spring? Here's something most people don't realise: they're not growing up from below.

Block paving w**ds germinate in the jointing sand (that fine sand between the blocks), from airborne seeds that landed, settled, and took root. Which is actually good news, because it means prevention comes down to a handful of well-timed habits.

Five pro tips from our surfacing team:

1. Sweep regularly. Leaves, moss spores, and general debris break down in the joints and create perfect conditions for w**d seeds. A quick sweep with a stiff brush every couple of weeks removes most of the problem before it starts.
2. Keep the joints topped up. Kiln-dried sand is what locks your pavers together and keeps w**ds out. If your joints have dipped below the block surface, they need refilling. For a longer-term solution, ask about polymeric sand, it hardens with water into a firm finish that w**ds really struggle with.
3. Seal every 2-5 years. A good sealant binds the jointing sand and adds a protective layer over the blocks, so airborne seeds can't reach the sand to germinate. Bonus: it also protects against oil stains and keeps colours from fading.
4. Pressure wash the right way. Low pressure, wide fan nozzle, held at a shallow angle (30-45°). Never aim straight down into the joints or you'll blast the sand right out, which is the fastest way to make w**ds worse. Always re-sand afterwards.
5. Catch w**ds early, chemical-free if you can. Boiling water poured directly onto a young w**d in the joints works brilliantly. A vinegar-based (acetic acid) w**d killer is a gentler alternative to glyphosate. Both work best before the w**d has had a chance to flower and seed.

Looked after properly, block paving can stay sharp and tidy for 20+ years. The trick is catching the small stuff early.

Thinking about a new driveway this year? Before you start getting quotes, here are a few things that catch homeowners off guard - and cost them money.

The timeline is longer than most people expect. From first enquiry to finished surface, you're typically looking at 4 to 12 weeks. Active installation is usually just 3 to 7 days - the rest is surveys, planning checks, scheduling, and curing time. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead of when you want the work done. Reputable contractors fill up fast, especially through spring and summer.

The cheapest quote is rarely the best value. The price difference between a thorough job and a corner-cutting one is often a few hundred pounds. The difference in how long the driveway lasts can be 15 years. What you can't see - sub-base depth, drainage preparation, quality of materials - is exactly where savings are made on low quotes.

Check before you dig.If you're replacing a front driveway with an impermeable surface (standard tarmac or concrete) and it covers more than 5m², you may need permitted development approval. Permeable surfaces like resin-bound aggregate or permeable block paving are generally fine without planning permission. Worth a quick check before work starts, not after.

Three red flags to watch for in any quote:
✅ Cash-only payment requested upfront
✅ No fixed address or verifiable local presence
✅ Vague descriptions like "standard base" with no depth specified

We've put together a detailed 2026 guide covering the full project timeline, realistic costs by material, SuDS drainage rules in plain English, and what a properly scoped quote should look like. Read it here:

Resin-bound. Resin-bonded. One letter apart, and people use them as if they're the same thing.

They aren't, and mixing them up is an expensive mistake.

Resin-bound is the smooth, joint-free finish: stone and resin mixed together, then trowelled. It's permeable, so it drains where it stands and keeps you inside the drainage rules.

Resin-bonded is a textured overlay: resin spread first, stone scattered on top. It looks like loose gravel without the mess, but it isn't permeable, and it behaves differently over time.

Neither is "wrong". But they sit differently on the £ to £££££ scale, they solve different problems, and a quote that blurs the two is a quote to question.

Save this before you compare quotes.

Quick tip if you've got a resin driveway: the most common mistake we see isn't neglect. It's overcleaning.

Pencil-jet pressure washing, wire brushes, patio acid cleaners. They all feel like they're doing a thorough job, but they can break the bond between resin and aggregate. Once that goes, no amount of cleaning brings it back.

The safer 2026 kit is genuinely simple:
✓ pH-neutral resin cleaner (15 to 30 minutes dwell time, then rinse)
✓ Stiff nylon brush, never wire
✓ Pressure washer on the lowest practical setting with a flat fan nozzle
✓ Eco sealer sprayer for resealing every one to two years

A quarterly spot clean and one good deep clean a year is usually plenty.

Eight things change the price of a driveway. Most people only know two of them.

We've put all eight in one checklist, each rated £ to £££££ for how hard it moves the number. Size is the obvious one. Access, drainage, and what's buried under your current surface are the ones that catch people out.

Know the eight and you can read any quote like an installer. You'll know what's fair, what's padded, and what's been quietly left out.

Swipe for the checklist, and comment COST if you'd like the printable version; we'll send it over by DM.
