Recent research from Ordnance Survey, the Met Office and 4 Earth Intelligence has named Portsmouth, Leicester, Exeter, Bristol and Nottingham as the British cities most vulnerable to extreme heat.

By 2040, 71 cities across England, Scotland and Wales will reach high heat vulnerability, highlighting the areas of the UK that need trees to help the most.

For gardeners up and down the UK, this is your call to action, to invest in shade, green space & living cover.

We couldn’t agree more with this idea. Every garden needs a tree, for wildlife, interest and shade.

Spring is when cherry blossom sells, but its a bad time to plant one.

Here's the bit the garden centre calendar skips.

Plant in spring and the tree spends everything on flowers and leaf. The roots get whatever's left, which in a dry May is not much.

Plant in autumn and it flips. The soil is still warm from summer, the top goes quiet, and the roots just get on with it for months before anything is asked of them.

By its first proper summer it's already anchored and finding its own water. That's the whole trick.

We grow ours in pots at the nursery here in Oxfordshire, peat-free, so a cherry can go in the ground right now. October soil, honestly, is lovely to dig.

A cherry planted this autumn will likely outlive whoever plants it.

Worth getting the timing right.
