What Should You Look for When Calling an Emergency Locksmith?

If you’re locked out or have a broken lock, choosing the right emergency locksmith can save you money, damage and unnecessary stress.

1. Speak directly to the locksmith
Ask who will actually be attending. With The Key Locksmith, you speak directly to Gerry — no national call centre or middleman.

2. Ask about pricing
Be cautious of extremely cheap “from £39” or “£49” adverts. Ask what you are realistically likely to pay before agreeing to a visit.

3. Non-destructive entry first
A professional locksmith should attempt to gain entry without damaging your door or lock wherever possible. Drilling shouldn’t automatically be the first option.

4. Get approval before replacement
If a lock does need drilling or replacing, the work and cost should be explained before it is carried out.

5. Check genuine reviews
Look at the locksmith’s history, local reputation and customer feedback.

6. Choose a genuine local locksmith
The Key Locksmith is an independent, family-run business based in Orpington, covering South East London and North Kent.

Van Guard Accessories Hook Lock Installation

Another van security upgrade completed by Gerry at The Key Locksmith, installing a Van Guard Accessories hook lock to add an extra layer of protection beyond the van’s factory locking system.

The hook bolt is designed to engage securely into the keep when locked, creating an additional independent locking point and making forced entry through the load doors much more difficult.

A great upgrade for tradespeople carrying tools and equipment, especially when combined with security plates and shielding to help protect vulnerable areas of the door.

Professionally fitted by Gerry with careful positioning for a strong, neat installation.

Van Guard hook locks, plates, shielding and other van security upgrades fitted from Orpington across Bromley, Kent and South East London.

Maxus Deliver 9 Van Security Upgrade – Locks & Plates Installed

Another van security upgrade completed by Gerry at The Key Locksmith, this time on a Maxus Deliver 9.

The van was fitted with additional high-security locks and protective plates, giving the load area an extra layer of protection against common methods of attack.

The combination of additional locks and plates helps:

🔐 Strengthen vulnerable door areas
🔐 Protect against forced entry and tool attacks
🔐 Add an independent locking point to the factory system
🔐 Provide a visible deterrent to thieves
🔐 Better protect tools, equipment and stock carried inside

The Maxus Deliver 9 is a large working van with plenty of valuable load space, so upgrading the physical security can make a big difference—especially for tradespeople and businesses carrying equipment every day.

Gerry supplies and installs van security from Orpington across Bromley, Kent and South East London, including hook locks, deadlocks, slamlocks, shielding, protective plates and Vanguard van accessories.

Van security fitted properly, with the right protection for the way you use your van.

🔒 Van Shielding Installation in Orpington

Another van security upgrade completed by Gerry at The Key Locksmith, this time for Envirolec Smart Energy Solutions (London) Ltd.

Van shielding is a great way of strengthening vulnerable areas around the factory locking system and helping protect against common attack methods. It can also work alongside hook locks and other additional security for a more complete setup.

A big thank you to the team at Envirolec Smart Energy Solutions (London) Ltd for trusting me with their van security.

And if you’re considering solar installation in Orpington, give Envirolec a look. Always good to support another local business working in the area.

Van shielding supplied and professionally fitted by Gerry in Orpington, with van security work available throughout Bromley, Kent and South East London.

Van Shields vs Hook Locks – What’s the Difference?

When it comes to protecting a work van, van shields and hook locks do two different jobs — and in my opinion, fitting both together gives you a much stronger security setup.

Van Security Shields

Internal and external shields are designed to reinforce vulnerable areas of the van and protect the factory locking mechanism, cables, wiring looms and door latches from attacks through the bodywork.

Pros:
• Help prevent door-skin puncture and handle-spiking attacks
• Protect vulnerable factory locking components
• External shields provide a visible deterrent
• Vehicle-specific options available
• Repair plates can also cover and strengthen previously damaged areas

Cons:
• A shield strengthens a vulnerable area but doesn’t add a completely separate locking point
• It only protects the particular attack area it has been designed for
• Different vans have different weaknesses, so the correct shielding is important

Hook Locks

A hook lock adds an independent mechanical lock to the door. The hook bolt engages into a separate keep and operates independently of the van’s original central locking system.

Pros:
• Adds another physical locking point
• Independent from the manufacturer’s locking system
• Makes forced entry through the load doors considerably harder
• Driver controls when the additional lock is engaged
• Excellent for builders, tradespeople and vans carrying tools or equipment

Cons:
• You need to physically lock and unlock it with the additional key
• A hook lock doesn’t necessarily protect vulnerable factory mechanisms elsewhere on the door
• Like any individual security product, it’s stronger as part of a layered setup

Why fit shields AND hook locks?

This is where you get the real benefit.

The shields protect vulnerable areas and the original locking components, while the hook locks provide an additional independent locking point.

So instead of relying on one type of protection, a thief potentially has several different security measures to overcome.

I fit Locks 4 Vans shielding, hook locks, deadlocks, slamlocks, anti-peel kits and other van-security upgrades, with the setup chosen around the make, model and how the van is actually used.

If you’re not sure whether your van needs shields, hook locks or both, speak to Gerry at The Key Locksmith and I’ll advise you on the vulnerable areas of your particular van.
