We’ve recently completed a week of tree work across St Mary’s, undertaking a range of residential projects in a unique island setting where careful planning, experience and consideration for the surrounding environment are essential.

This large willow had developed a substantial crack and was positioned extremely close to our client’s property. With winter approaching, leaving the tree unmanaged wasn’t an option.

Our solution was a carefully planned crown reduction, reducing the tree’s overall size and weight while retaining its natural character and amenity value.

Today’s project was an enormous hedge requiring two separate climbs, careful reduction and an exceptional level of precision throughout.

At this scale, achieving a clean, natural and balanced finish is highly technical. Every cut has to be considered. The shape, density and overall proportions need to work together — while maintaining the character of the hedge.

The Art of the Possible.

Planning complexity is something I spent years doing as a Commissioned Officer in the British Army.

I was regularly asked to plan things from scratch, often with little or no previous experience to draw upon.

Military training camps in California.

Radio equipment shipped through Canada, requiring diplomatic clearance.

Aircraft booked through RAF Brize Norton.

Logistical support coordinated with NATO partners.

Six-week overseas deployments.

It taught me one thing:

Complex doesn’t mean impossible.

Earlier this year, I received a call completely out of the blue:

“Hi, is this Veteran Tree Surgeons?”

“Yes, how can I help?”

“We’ve looked at your website. Would you be able to manage a number of estates across Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney?”

Before I’d even answered, I already knew.

Yes.

Not because I’m arrogant.

Because I’ve spent years learning how to break complex problems down, understand the constraints and build a plan that works.

And I’m not a “Yes Man”.

If something is unworkable, I’ll say so.

But I’ll also offer an alternative that achieves what the client actually needs.

🌳 WHY DOES THE RIGHT TREE SURGERY MATTER?

Because exceptional tree work isn’t about removing as much as possible.

It’s about understanding the tree, the property and what the client is actually trying to achieve — then delivering the right solution.

Recently, we were entrusted with bringing a substantial beech tree under control at a private property.

The brief was simple:

💡 Improve the light levels around the driveway and, subsequently, within the house.

The original request was to reduce some of the tree’s height.

However, after assessing the tree and understanding the desired outcome, we identified a more considered approach.

Rather than unnecessarily reducing the overall height, we carried out a full circumference crown lift to the height of the house.

The result?

☀️ Significantly improved natural light around the driveway and property.

🏡 A noticeably brighter interior.

🌳 A mature beech tree retaining much of its natural form and presence.

The work also came with added complexity, with several cables running through the crown.

This required careful planning and specialist rigging techniques to safely lower the larger limbs to ground level.
