I left the British Army after 19 years of Regular and Reserve service in August 2023.

In August 2024, I launched Veteran Tree Surgeons with one clear ambition: to become self-employed and embrace both the freedom and responsibility that comes with building a business from the ground up.

I’ve always been ambitious, and when I set myself a goal, I commit fully to making it happen.

At the start, the goal was simple: “run a successful business.”
Looking back now, that was incredibly vague — but perhaps that’s what made the journey so exciting.

I have countless targets in mind for Veteran Tree Surgeons, but even so, the business has already surpassed where I expected it to be at this stage.

As I write this on my way back from Jersey in the Channel Islands, Veteran Tree Surgeons is delivering a range of estate management contracts across the island, with further projects planned later this year in Guernsey and Alderney.

Despite that growth, one target will never leave my focus: continuing to provide a premium service for both existing and new clients across West Lancashire and the surrounding areas.

The mantra at Veteran Tree Surgeons has always been — and always will be — to deliver everything with the utmost professionalism, integrity, and efficiency.

Three large ash trees suffering from advanced disease.
Live cables running directly through the canopy.
Homes and structures positioned within extremely close proximity.

A high-risk operation requiring careful planning, specialist machinery, and absolute precision throughout.

To safely dismantle and remove the trees, we deployed a 30-metre telescopic truck-mounted grabber, allowing controlled handling in a very restricted environment.

With serious safety concerns for the homeowners and potential insurance implications, every aspect of this project was managed to the highest professional standard.

Complex tree work demands more than just cutting trees down — it requires experience, the correct equipment, and a team capable of delivering safely and professionally under pressure.

A precision tree reduction completed today 🌳

This mature tree had outgrown its setting, with its proximity to surrounding properties affecting both light levels and insurance considerations.

We carried out a carefully considered crown reduction—retaining the tree’s natural form while bringing it back into proportion with its environment. Just as importantly, the work was timed and executed in line with the tree’s natural growth cycle, ensuring we support its long-term health rather than compromise it.

Thoughtful pruning isn’t just about size—it’s about understanding how a tree responds season to season, and working with nature, not against it.

The result is a balanced, refined tree that sits comfortably within its space while continuing to thrive.

Big day on site today ☀️🌳

Our team was up at full stretch—20 metres high in the cherry picker—taking in incredible views right across the Lancashire plains while safely carrying out the removal of four dead trees.

A recent project completed by Veteran Tree Surgeons, involving the removal of three mature sycamore trees in a highly restricted environment.

The trees were positioned within close proximity to greenhouses, sheds, and boundary fencing, requiring a fully controlled, sectional dismantling approach. Using advanced rigging techniques, each section was carefully lowered to ensure complete protection of the surrounding structures.

The video, captured by our climber at approximately 12 metres, provides a clear perspective of the constraints on site and the level of precision required to carry out the work safely and efficiently.

May is an excellent time to carry out considered tree work 🌳

With trees now in full leaf, their form, balance, and overall presence within the garden become much clearer—making it the ideal point to refine and manage growth.

Appropriate work this time of year includes:

— Crown lifting and thinning to improve light and spatial quality
— Deadwood removal to enhance safety and long-term condition
— Detailed inspections to identify early-stage issues

Well-executed tree work at this stage is rarely about reduction for the sake of it, but about subtle adjustments that improve structure, allow more light through, and maintain the character of the tree.

The focus is always on work that is proportionate, well judged, and appropriate to the season.
