Howson Gardening Gardener based in Suffolk. Garden Design & Planning | Garden Tidy Up | Mowing | Weeding | Tree Care Gardening with the personal touch. A place to breathe.

In recent years our gardens have become our sanctuaries, our places of rest and recuperation. Howson gardening aims to give you a perfect place to enjoy, a garden you can escape to after a busy day. With 20 years experience and a passion for plants and garden design, my service will take the stress out of maintaining a good garden, that benefits not only you, but also the earth we all share and at good prices, because after all gardening shouldn’t cost the earth. I have a deep passion for gardening. Nothing is more satisfying or rewarding than planting a seed and watching it grow, then planting out that seedling into a border of plants to see them thrive. I’ve always been a gardener and come from a family of gardeners, most importantly of all my late Grandad who was an avid gardener filled the back garden of his council house with veg, that’s where the passion began for me. Picking Raspberries, Gooseberries and countless runner beans every summer, a memory burned hard in my mind. So I have set up a gardening service to follow my passion, and also to share my knowledge and enjoyment of the garden with you, the customer. I’ll turn my hand to anything garden related, and use my knowledge to the best of my ability, so call me, for an enthusiastic and energetic approach to garden design and maintenance.

Here we are. Finishing Day. Build complete and here are the ins and outs of the design and build of this New Build Garden. Taking what was essentially a blank building plot into a thriving garden with habitat for nature. Enjoy the tour!

Day 7 complete. We finally had some rain!

Day 6. Sit rep. Turf laid. Patio curve curved. Key stone for the stepping stones set. Amazing to see how when you bring in the green the nature follows. Bringing to life a new build plot garden one step at a time. 👍😀💪

Day 5. Bringing in the Ecological backdrop to the garden today starting with the soil. Mulching and boosting the soil, working in goodness to lifeless ground. Warm mulchy goodness from will help boost bacteria in the soil. That bacteria will feed and promote healthy plant growth, that in turn brings in pollinating and predating insects, which in turn brings in bird life and life in general! It is amazing how when you plant it transforms a space and nature just finds it! Turf to lay tomorrow and I’ll sort the curvy patio edge. 😉

Morning. Ginkgo “Biloba” the “living fossil” tree. Dates back to the dinosaur period! This ancient species loves poor soil and tough conditions. So, where better to plant it than in a new build estate. Plus, I kind of like the irony.

The understated, elegant magnificence of the mighty Calamagrostis “Karl Foerster”. My absolute favourite grass. Tall, stately and golden brown in the October morning light. It’s seed heads rustle in the slight breeze, they catch the light, hold the colour in a border at this time of year whilst everything else gradually fade. These architectural plants keep on giving.

Day 4 of this build complete. Gradually changing from a building site to a garden by boosting the soil and refreshing its nutrient value. Adding life to the lower tier through the addition of trees and shrubs for structure, mixed with tall stemmed perennials attracting insects, birds, and ecology. Vital on new build plots and vital for our environment. Our little patches of outside space can make a huge difference!

Day 3. We’ve begun to lay the patio, and shape up the lower tier of this new build garden. The garden shed the developers installed is so on the “wonk” that our accurate, quality work puts it to shame. There’s no cutting corners on professional installation and design in our gardens. Filtering through the poor ground, double digging to ensure all rubble and building waste is removed ready for lovely loamy topsoil. Taking shape now, nice to begin the build after the messy dig out. The space is crying out for some greenery!

Day 2 build complete. Paving base laid, sleeper beds built - design change on these creating stepped tiered bed, to help soften the area. Hard going on rough soil, which is just essentially building waste. New build gardens are hard work for this reason. Poor soil. However, there’s ways around that, we will soon have a garden bursting with colour and life!
