Another nice case study to share, this time from a hospital in Shropshire.

The before and after pictures show the replacement of aged, non-condensing pressure jet boilers with new condensing, modulating units.

Lord Combustion managed and undertook the full project, including all associated works to flues, pipework, pumps and thermal insulation.

A number of our clients have fallen victim to copper theft - particularly schools broken into over the summer holidays, with pipework stolen from boiler houses causing flooding and damage.

When this happens, our teams mobilise quickly to repair, replace and reinstate services. This year, we supported a school threatened with delayed opening after a theft, getting them fully operational ahead of the Autumn term.

This also happens in domestic properties (pictured here) so it’s a good reminder to have strong security in place while you’re away.

Having worked in so many wonderful buildings across our long history, it's sometimes nice to look back on some of our favourite projects.

Back in 1992, David Lord Engineering Ltd, from which Lord Combustion Services evolved, completed a full refurbishment of the grade 2 listed Freemasons' Hall in London’s Covent Garden.

We removed the existing steam plant and installed a new LPHW heating system, distribution services and BMS controls throughout, at a project value of £796,000 - and we continued maintaining the boiler equipment there until early 2016.

“Lord” only knows what’s happening here!

On a recent trip to Italy, one of our team spotted a water jet spray attachment connected to the mains cold water supply, seemingly used in place of a toilet brush.

Common in Italy but rarely seen in the UK, these attachments pose a fluid category 5 risk. With the hose long enough to submerge in the bowl, proper backflow prevention is essential to avoid contamination of the mains water supply.

Perhaps they should’ve called Lord - we don’t mind another trip to Italy 😉

One from the archives!

Did you know that back in 1990, Lord designed and manufactured a purpose-built air conditioning plant for the sealed display enclosure housing the Mappa Mundi at Hereford Cathedral?

Running 24 hours a day, the plant keeps the enclosure at a steady temperature and humidity, protecting the vellum from deterioration and helping preserve this remarkable piece of history for generations to come.

The summer holidays are always a busy time for plant room upgrades, giving schools the chance to carry out essential works without disrupting learning.

In this example from one of our typical projects, Lord Combustion replaced two ageing, inefficient boilers at a Walsall primary school with a cascade of six new condensing, modulating boilers, alongside new flues, pumps with variable speed drives and BMS controls.

The result is improved efficiency, closer matching of output to demand and greater resilience should any single unit fail - a great example of why keeping plant rooms up to date matters.
