New nasal products bring new testing challenges. Each one brings new questions, new considerations and new opportunities to learn.

That changing landscape will be a big part of the conversation at the IPAC-RS 2026 Nasal Innovation Forum.

In our EnviroMate™ application note, temperature and relative humidity were monitored inside an EnviroMate unit and across an air-conditioned lab over several days.

The results show why it is worth looking beyond room-level control when investigating variability in inhaler testing.

Manual actuation can introduce an avoidable source of variability into MDI testing, from shake technique and shake-to-fire timing to actuation profile, repeat firing and firing-to-waste.

And these differences don’t have to be large. Recent data show that a change of just one second can influence delivered dose, making it harder to separate product performance from handling variability.

Automating these repetitive, operator-dependent steps can help create more controlled, repeatable test conditions, while freeing skilled analysts to focus on higher-value work.

Consistency matters for wasted shots too: unrepresentative firing-to-waste can influence the doses that remain in the device and, ultimately, the measurements that follow.

Same impactor. A different view of inhaler performance.

Compendial APSD gives us the standardised conditions needed for robust, repeatable measurement. But, of course, patients don’t inhale at a constant flow rate through a pharmacopoeial induction port.

That’s where Realistic APSD (rAPSD) adds another layer.

Building on the established NGI workflow, rAPSD introduces more patient-representative test conditions using:
• an Alberta Idealised Throat
• a breathing simulator
• a mixing inlet

Together, these components help us look at inhaler performance across more representative throat geometries and inhalation profiles.

Why does that matter? Because it can help reveal differences between test and reference products that may not be apparent under standard compendial conditions.

Compendial APSD and rAPSD serve different purposes. But when they are used together, they can give us a more complete picture of inhaler performance.
