I will spend this winter hauling through my digital archives for before pics, but trust me when I say that this garden is now the opposite of what it was 12 months ago.

From barren new build, to wildlife and people haven. Crammed full of native plants (I loved planting an Ivy ❀️), a pond as the central feature, a cosy corner to sit and contemplate life, whilst watching it play out in the garden.

I just wish it was mine πŸ˜….

Yesterday we added more plants, and planted bulbs, while monitoring which of the native plants have been happiest. Loads of them have seeded, so that's a nice brucey bonus ✨.

Border development continues...

These borders will be home to a prairie style planting scheme. It's being done over time; soil health was vital, so it was mulched and covered over this summer. Not pretty to look at, but it made the ground an absolute wormy delight to plant into.

My client has grown some incredible Rudbeckias from seed, so we've used minimal bought in compost for a lot of the plants.

Next up: more gaps were filled yesterday with plants from Wholesale Perennial Nursery, I'll be receiving many plugs of native plants from Naturescape (I can never find their insta handle) and some bare root plants will also be coming when the time is right ▢️.

I truly believe that the whole of humanity needs to put plants back at the centre of our societies.

Three times a year I write a feature on wildlife gardening for the amazing charity .loveplants. This feature slots into a magazine that is basically a love letter to our botanical buddies. .loveplants KNOW the importance of plants.

We dont all need an allotment to be pro plant. Simply be curious, notice them, nurture them with whatever time and space you have, and if you can, consider being a member of this amazing organisation to help them do their work.

Warning ⚠️ these photos contain a healthy dose of post-holiday gloat βš οΈπŸ™ƒ

I recently took a break from the absolutely craziest of crazy planting seasons, with ma buddies Gareth Richards and Michelle Cooper to Brittany.

It was yet another holiday of bugs, botany, beaches and bikes ❀️. The street plants in France are exquisite- because they don't spray with glyphosate β€οΈπŸ‘. We were treated to SO much wildlife, I'm still all fuzzy inside from it- including:

Asian Hornets 😐😬
Many, many European Hornets (like the size of flying mice)
An Adder 🀯
Great White Egret
Kingfisher
Firebugs
Clouded Yellow butterflies (that took some serious chasing)
A very friendly Sea Lice

And on the ferry:
Gannets galore
A freakin' Tuna ball! With dolphins herding them and gannets diving into the writhing massacre!!!!!!!!
Fin whale
Dolphins - as one fellow passenger said- they're like ten a penny πŸ˜…

It's all going on out there, if you just get outside if you can, and open your eyes and ears πŸ₯°.

Now it's back to the mission of increasing biodiversity in gardens!

Oh deary me....

Does anyone else get plant related earworms when they're working with a particular plant?

Another of my go-to's is

And it's HY-LO-TELEPHIUM everywhere where you go (to hi-lo silver lining) every, damned, time I plant one.

Happy Friday everyone! πŸ€ͺ

This year I'm specialising in....

Really underwhelming before/after photos πŸ˜….

Why? Because I'm opting to put in the teeniest of plants. My clients understand that gardening is a process; slow change is better, more resilient change. It involves less compost, and plants can find their own way faster. These wildflowers will look amazing once they grow up.

It does take a bit more looking after and checking, but in the long run it'll cost you and the planet less!

It's just not that insta-ready, but I say that's a measure of how good something is, because garden beauty is more than just aesthetic πŸ˜‰.

As smooth as a... Newt.

This I'm celebrating the resilience of our amphibious life. Despite the heat and intense dry of 2026, I am finding survivors in my gardens ❀️.

This Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) was in the path of our spades when creating a new wildflower border, so we gently popped it under the deadhedge.

They only move into ponds to breed in spring. They spend the vast majority of their time on land, munching invertebrates. Having complexity in your garden; places to hide like rockeries, woodpiles and dead hedges is vital for them to move across your garden and to stay cool.

A little tour of a garden I work in...

More to be done, but just check out the shear abundance of seedlings here. A lot of people would be afraid of this, but a little knowledge of what they are goes a long way....

Big shout out to .andy for the awesome pond he installed here!

In my happy place....

Surrounded by new, green life.

Feeling revved at sending these beautiful out into the Nottingham garden-wilds, and spreading abundance β€οΈπŸ’š.

This autumn is unprecedented in how many plants are going into the ground. But my clients are mostly all in acceptance that desperate, times call for desperate, planty measures.

Plants are the answer. I should say because I have definitely seen a huge uptick in the quantity of out there 😱😫.
