🚫 Sometimes a simple call-out uncovers a much bigger problem…

We were called out today to a boiler that initially appeared to have a simple fault — low system pressure.

After repressurising and carrying out our checks, however, we found:

❌ Both automatic air vents on the boiler leaking
❌ Heating system severely sludged up
❌ No magnetic or system filters fitted
❌ Condensate pipe run externally in 21mm pipework
❌ Condensate terminating directly onto the ground

If you look closely at the pictures, you can actually see where the acidic condensate water has started eroding the slab underneath the pipe.

External condensate pipework should be appropriately sized — typically at least 32mm — and terminate correctly into a suitable drain or other approved disposal point, rather than simply discharging onto the ground.

Unfortunately, this installation has all the signs of a job that was done as cheaply as possible rather than with long-term reliability in mind.

The boiler was already in the property when the customer purchased the house, so after discussing the condition of the boiler and heating system, they decided the best option for them was to replace it rather than start spending money putting the existing installation right.

⚠️ THIS BOILER IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD — AND NOW IT NEEDS REPLACING…

We were called out to this boiler today because the pressure relief valve was discharging water every time the system was pressurised.

As we do with every boiler we attend, we carried out a general visual inspection while we were there — and unfortunately, we spotted something much more serious.

There was severe rusting and evidence of a long-standing leak around the flow pipe.

On closer inspection, we discovered that somebody had previously attempted to deal with the leak by wrapping electrical tape around it. 😳

Rather than fixing the problem, the tape had effectively held moisture against the area, allowing the corrosion to continue and cause even more damage.

By the time we removed it and inspected everything properly, the rust had gone straight through the boiler chassis. It was so badly corroded that we could actually push a screwdriver through the affected metalwork.

We contacted Ideal for advice, and unfortunately the verdict was exactly what we expected:

❌ The boiler cannot be safely repaired
❌ The damaged chassis cannot simply be patched up
❌ The boiler needs replacing

And here's the shocking part…

👉 THIS BOILER IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD.

A boiler of this age should have had plenty of life left in it, but unfortunately the long-standing leak and corrosion have brought its life to a premature end.

The customer is now booked in with us for a new boiler on Monday.

What makes this one even more concerning is the history of the boiler.

According to the customer, it has never been serviced or repaired since the day it was installed seven years ago. That raises the worrying possibility that the electrical tape may have been there since the original installation.

It’s a good reminder of two things:

🔧 Have your boiler serviced regularly. Small leaks and corrosion can be picked up before they turn into much bigger — and much more expensive — problems.

💷 Don’t choose a boiler installer purely because they’re the cheapest quote. A quality installation carried out properly by an experienced engineer can save you a lot of money and hassle further down the line.

Seven years old and already needing replacement.

Like most things in life — you generally get what you pay for.
