Security professionals are often expected to be the calm person in a difficult situation. That responsibility can come with pressure, and nobody should feel they have to keep it to themselves.

Today, we’re pleased to announce that Norvic Security Group will be becoming Mindful Norfolk Champions.

Working in security means working with people: our colleagues, our clients and the communities around us. We believe that taking time to listen, showing understanding and encouraging conversations about mental wellbeing all matter.

INCREASED THREATS. GREATER VIGILANCE.

The recent incident in Gloucestershire, where five men were arrested following reports of suspicious vehicles travelling towards RAF Fairford, is another reminder of the importance of proactive protective security.
Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation, with the arrests involving suspected offences under the Explosives Act and suspected preparation of a terrorist act. As this remains an active investigation, it is important not to speculate beyond the information released by police. Gloucestershire Police
Incidents like this reinforce why organisations responsible for venues, events, critical assets and high-footfall environments should regularly review their search and security procedures.

MONDAY — WHO’S IN YOUR OFFICE?

You arrive at work and find people inside your office.

They’re moving around your workspace, potentially near documents, equipment and information that you’re responsible for.

You ask why they’re there.

The answer?

“If you don’t like it, you can always leave.”

That isn’t how professional access should work.

Businesses spend a lot of time thinking about cyber security, alarms and CCTV, but physical access to offices and sensitive areas can be just as important.

Who can enter your workplace?

Who has keys?

Who is authorised to access sensitive areas?

And, crucially, who is accountable when those boundaries aren’t respected?

Security isn’t simply about stopping someone climbing a fence.

It’s also about protecting your people, your information, your assets and the environment you operate from.

Good security starts with knowing who has access, and why.

IF SECURITY ONLY BECOMES IMPORTANT AFTER THE INCIDENT, IT IS ALREADY TOO LATE

Security is often treated as an expense to reduce—until something goes wrong.

After a theft, break-in or operational failure, the conversation changes quickly.

The cheapest quotation no longer matters when a business is dealing with:

• Stolen or damaged assets
• Vandalism and repair costs
• Operational shutdowns
• Threats against employees
• Lost customer confidence
• Insurance disputes
• Regulatory scrutiny
• Reports that cannot support an investigation

By then, the cost is no longer limited to an hourly security rate.

It includes disruption, management time, reputational damage and the pressure carried by those responsible for resolving it.

Effective security begins before the incident.

It means understanding the site, identifying credible risks and selecting personnel with the training, judgement and capabilities the environment requires.

THE PERSON BEHIND THE UNIFORM MATTERS

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

People working in security are often expected to remain calm, capable and professional regardless of what happens around them.

They may face confrontation, threats, isolation, long night shifts and incidents that remain with them after the uniform comes off.

Being strong should never mean remaining silent.

At Norvic Security Group, every guard and officer has access to free, confidential counselling. They do not need to wait until they reach breaking point, and they do not need to justify asking for support.

Sometimes people need professional guidance. Sometimes they need help processing a difficult incident. Sometimes they simply need a confidential conversation with someone outside the workplace.

Providing that access is not an optional extra. It is part of our responsibility as an employer.

We want our people to know that their wellbeing matters just as much as their performance. A security officer cannot be expected to protect others properly if nobody is looking after them.

We will also be taking further steps to develop mental-health champions within Norvic and strengthen the support available to our team and the wider Norfolk community.

This is not something we want to mention only once a year. Mental-health support must be visible, accessible and taken seriously throughout the year.

Check on your colleagues. Check on the person who always appears strong. Ask twice when someone says they are fine, and make time to listen without judgement.

The person wearing the uniform is still a person—and that person matters.
