My work isn't mass-produced or algorithm-optimised.

It's a slow process, human-made and deeply meaningful. The stitches slow me down, but in the best way.

Basically, I create whatever I need to get out of my system and hope that it might resonate with someone else 🤷‍♀️

Is there any other way to truly make art!?

COLOUR DIARIES - BLUE
💙💙💙💙💙

This particular shade of blue tends to make an appearance on my palette when I need a bit of breathing room.

It feels like a window being opened, fresh sea air, cold water, a new perspective.

It's not a colour I'm particularly confident with and I never consciously decide to use it, but sometimes it just calls to me and I give in.

More often than not it ends up making the piece feel more complete, so I guess it shows what I know 🤷‍♀️😆🫠

🌈 A peek behind the curtain - the feelings behind the painting 🌈
___

This was one of the first paintings I ever made, back in 2024. It came from a very specific and slightly peculiar phase of early motherhood in which I felt simultaneously overstimulated and invisible.

I was needed constantly, but rarely actually ✨seen✨

The painting exploded in loud colours.

💛 the yellow was because quiet wasn't available to me, only noise.
💙 dark blue for grounding - because I still believed I'd find myself again (eventually).
🩷 glimmers of fuchsia behind everything else because there were moments of absolute joy hiding in amongst the exhaustion.

Before starting this whole painting journey, I'd often assumed that abstract paintings were mysterious or unknowable, but I feel like most of mine are actually pretty straightforward.

What do you reckon?

The Chaos and The Calm 🌀🎐

The chaos:

I paint quickly. There's a fair amount of set-up involved, but once I'm in the moment I don't have much time to get out all the emotions I need to, so I just go for it. Everything out of my system in one quick burst of nighttime energy.

The calm:

I embellish slowly. This is the calm after the storm. When everything is on the page and all cried out. This part involves deliberation, gentle consideration and sometimes deep contemplation.

It’s a rhythm that helps me utilise - and appreciate - both the chaos and the calm I'm forever flitting between since becoming a mum 🦋

Having a three year old is the absolute best. And also really bloody hard. It's a seemingly neverending emotional rollercoaster 🎢

I'm pretty sure between me and him, we cover every single emotion every single day.

Who else is deep in the trenches of the "threenager" phase!? Any advice!?

"I wish I had time to do something creative” is probably a thought you have had at least once since becoming a mum - I'm pretty sure I said it to myself every day for about the first 12 months 🫠

Pre-motherhood, time to be creative meant:

✨ a blissfully uninterrupted afternoon
✨ a clean table
✨ all the right materials
✨ a brain that wasn't busy remembering that the kids feet need measuring (again), their dental check up is due, you need to pick up milk on the way home and the tiny person hid the remote somewhere this morning and it's still not been located (though knowing him it's probably inside a tower made of magnatiles again)

These days, creativity doesn't happen like it used to.

My paintings definitely don't happen like that.
They happen at 9:48pm, in my pyjamas with a cup of tea that's already gone cold and a silent panic that the child will almost certainly wake up the minute I finish and finally collapse into bed at 10.

Ten minute pockets of daily me time are what I have given myself to do something creative - and those ten minutes are so precious, a way of reminding myself: I am an artist and I'm still in here.

I'm not saying that every mother should immediately take up painting, and I'm not suggesting that you should add anything else to your already impossible to-do list if it's not going to genuinely help.

But you DO deserve moments that belong only to you.

We mums have got to try to stop treating life like a race that we're falling behind in.

Some things will inevitably take longer when you’re raising a kid. Some things are supposed to grow slowly. Some things need to have pauses chucked in every now and then or they'd be too much to handle in one go.

And that doesn’t mean that you’re doing it wrong, or that you're losing the race. Slow down, take a break once in a while and stop feeling so damn guilty about it! 🌿

Who else needs to hear this today?

For a long time, I thought creativity only counted if I had ✨ hours to paint
✨ a clean desk
✨ the right materials
✨ a clear head
✨ a child who slept through the night

So, basically, never 🫠

Motherhood has taught me that creativity has to become smaller, messier and much more forgiving.

It might be a five-minute sketch.
It might be choosing the brightest socks in your drawer.
It might be putting on lipstick before a day spent wiping somebody else's nose.

Creativity is not a luxury reserved for people with uninterrupted afternoons - it is a way of remembering that you are still in there 🩷

This painting took about ten minutes.

Not out of choice, but because I only had enough energy for ten minutes after bedtime.

After a day of endless snack requests (how can someone so small be so hungry all the time!?), a day full of "Mummy, watch me jump!" over and over and over, a minor crisis when he'd lost one of his dinosaurs when it was, in fact, in his pocket the whole time.

But I was thankful for those ten minutes, and they were really needed 🩷

Because for ten minutes, I wasn't just someone's mum. I wasn't the snack provider, the finder of lost dinosaurs or the watcher of 4327 jumps.

I was just a person, alone, holding a paintbrush.

Doing tiny things for myself, even just for ten minutes, is still important. I didn't disappear when I became a mum: I evolved 🐉

✨ What is one tiny thing that you do to still feel like yourself?
