We spotted this while photographing the roses. A 7-spot ladybird, tucked between the petals. 🐞
A single 7-spot ladybird can eat up to 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. The larvae are even more effective. A garden with a healthy ladybird population has natural pest control that no spray can replicate — and unlike pesticides, it gets more effective the more you leave it alone.
But ladybirds don't appear in every garden. They avoid ones with high pesticide use, poor plant diversity, and not enough structural complexity to overwinter in. Finding one is a signal that something is working.

The plum tree update you've been waiting for. 🍑
We're nearly there. The fruit has been coming along beautifully over the past few weeks — you can see the full range here, from the green ones still a little way off, through the pink blush stage, all the way to the deep purple ones that are just about ready.
The tree has had a fortnightly feed with Northern Algae Natural Plant Booster through the growing season, and it's showing. Good root health means the tree can sustain a crop like this one without the branches stripping early or the fruit dropping before it's ripe.

Sometimes the garden stops you in your tracks. 🌹

Before and after. Same lawn. Same garden. A couple of weeks apart. 🌿

This is Beth Alexander's newly laid lawn — freshly turfed, pale, patchy, and still finding its feet. And then, after a fortnightly feed with Northern Algae Natural Plant Booster, that's the result. Deep green, thick, and healthy enough that two very handsome pooches clearly approve.

Beth has been kind enough to share her garden journey with us and it's been quite a season — roses rescued from near death, late-planted veg germinating in 4 days, a Wisteria flowering in its second year, and plants brought back from the Dobbies dead section. The lawn is just the latest chapter.

Two butterflies, one Buddleia. We've just published a new blog post about what this actually means for your garden.

The orange one with the black border and white spots is a Painted Lady — one of the world's great long-distance migrants. It may well have flown from North Africa to get here. The rust-orange one with those striking eye markings in the still photo is a Peacock — one of Britain's most beautiful garden butterflies, which actually breeds here and lays its eggs on nettles.

Two different species on the same shrub at the same time isn't luck. Butterflies are picky. They avoid gardens with high pesticide use, they need plants that are actually flowering well and producing good nectar, and they notice the difference between a plant that's thriving and one that's just surviving.

The blog post covers how to identify both species, what Buddleia actually does for pollinators, and why soil health is the starting point for a garden that wildlife genuinely chooses.

From the garden to the plate in a single morning.

These peas were growing in the garden at breakfast time. Fed throughout the season with Northern Algae Natural Plant Booster — no synthetic chemicals, no artificial feeds — picked fresh, cooked simply, and on the table by lunch.

That red and gold combination is hard to argue with in July sunshine. Same plant, completely different story. Here's something worth knowing about Marguerite daisies:
This deep crimson one and the pink and white pot we shared earlier are exactly the same species — Argyranthemum frutescens. Different cultivar, completely different character. This one is almost tropical in that light. Both Marguerite daisies. Both fed with Northern Algae. The variety does the rest.
The thing we love about this plant is the return you get for very little effort. Feed it, deadhead it regularly, and it will flower continuously from May to October. No chemicals, no complicated routine.

If you see one at a garden centre this week, it's worth grabbing. You'll still get three to four months of colour from a plant bought now.
