Thinking of upgrading the entry system in a block of flats or HMO? Tenants increasingly expect video entry and app-based access, but moving on from an audio-only buzzer isn’t always a straight swap.

In older buildings, existing cabling and power arrangements may not support a modern system. A successful upgrade needs to be treated as an infrastructure job, planned before installation.

Key things to check:
• Existing cables, routes and power supply
• Neat, structured cable routes, with suitable earthing and protection
• Who can grant access, how remote release works, and any recording and consent considerations

Good planning helps avoid installing a system that won’t work as intended. A qualified electrician should design and install the upgrade. In a block, you may also need permission from the freeholder or under the lease before work begins.

Considering an upgrade? We’re happy to discuss your property and what may be involved.

Could your smoke or heat alarm be past its best? Many manufacturers recommend replacing alarms after around 10 years. Sensors can degrade or fail without warning, so check the date and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on service life and replacement.

A lone battery alarm in a hallway is not the same as a properly designed interlinked system. With interlinked alarms, when one detects danger, they all sound. Mains-powered alarms with battery backup can provide a dependable solution when correctly installed.

Good placement matters too:
• Smoke alarms are usually needed on escape routes and landings.
• A heat alarm is generally more suitable for a kitchen than a smoke alarm.
• Landlords should keep alarms in working order and test them, following current guidance and manufacturer instructions.

If your alarms aren’t interlinked or the wiring is dated, ask a qualified electrician to assess the options. Mains-powered alarm installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician, following relevant current guidance, including BS 5839 where applicable.

When someone asks, “Can anyone recommend a spark?”, a helpful answer should include more than a name and phone number.

Before booking any electrician, check that:
• Their registration with a recognised competent person scheme or registration body is current.
• You’ll receive the correct certificate and test results, not just an invoice.
• The existing consumer unit/fuse board, earthing and bonding will be checked before work is quoted.
• They will explain how the cable will be run, with neat, tidy and well-organised routes rather than quick surface runs.

Small jobs matter too. Extra double sockets, USB sockets, a socket for a telly unit, desk or tumble dryer, changing a light fitting, or finding a fault should all be discussed properly. Where an additional socket is needed, ask whether it genuinely requires a new circuit rather than simply another spur from the ring final.

Planning a kitchen refit? Involve your electrician and kitchen fitter at the rip-out stage, not after the units are installed.

Early planning helps get the details right, including:
• Extra sockets in practical positions
• Suitable supplies and dedicated circuits for the oven and hob
• Appliance locations and cable routes
• Under-cabinet lighting and ceiling downlights
• Consumer unit capacity and RCD protection
• Neat, tidy first-fix work hidden behind the finished kitchen

Trying to retrofit electrics later can mean disruption, visible cables and compromises to the final finish. Coordinating the work from the start helps create a well-organised kitchen that looks as good as it works.

A Green Electrical Services carries out kitchen electrical work across High Peak, Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Macclesfield and Stockport. All work is completed by a qualified electrician and designed in line with BS 7671.

Before the darker evenings arrive, is your outdoor lighting doing the right job? 💡

PIR security lights switch on when movement is detected, making them useful around entrances, paths and access points. Dusk-to-dawn lighting uses a photocell to provide a steady, welcoming glow from evening until morning.

Good positioning matters. Lights should cover likely approaches and boundaries without shining directly into a neighbour’s windows or creating harsh glare. Over-bright, unshielded floodlights can cause complaints, light pollution and poor visibility through excessive contrast.

For the best result, pair practical security lighting with subtle decorative garden lighting, so your front garden remains attractive as well as secure.

A Green Electrical Services provides neat, tidy outdoor lighting installations across High Peak, Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Macclesfield and Stockport. We use quality materials and install safely in line with BS 7671. All outdoor electrical work should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Is your fuse board showing its age? Warning signs include rewirable fuses, no RCD protection, no spare ways for new circuits, a plastic enclosure, or any sign of heat, discolouration or scorching.

A modern consumer unit upgrade can provide RCBO protection for each circuit, surge protection, correct circuit labelling and room to extend safely in the future. It can also help bring the installation in line with current requirements under BS 7671, subject to a proper inspection and testing.

Consumer unit work should always be carried out by a qualified electrician and must never be attempted as DIY. This is particularly important for homeowners and landlords responsible for electrical safety.

A Green Electrical Services provides neat, well-organised consumer unit upgrades across High Peak, Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Macclesfield and Stockport.

Most buyers arrange a property survey but never have the electrical installation properly inspected. An EICR gives you a documented picture of its condition before you commit.

It can help identify:
• A dated consumer unit or limited RCD protection
• Old rubber or lead-sheathed cables
• Missing earthing or bonding
• Unsafe DIY alterations
• C1 and C2 observations requiring urgent attention

With the report in hand, you can make a more informed decision, negotiate with the seller where appropriate, or budget realistically for remedial work before moving in.

An EICR is a report on the condition of the installation at the time of testing, not a guarantee. It is not a substitute for a full property survey or legal advice.

Buying locally? Book an EICR with a qualified electrician before exchange or committing to the purchase.

Does your RCD or RCBO trip whenever it rains? It usually points to moisture getting into an outdoor electrical fitting, such as garden lighting joints, an IP-rated fitting with a damaged seal, or a tired outdoor socket.

Resetting the breaker is not a fix. Intermittent faults rarely stay intermittent and can become more serious over time.

Never open outdoor fittings or work live. If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and contact a qualified electrician.

Proper fault finding may include insulation resistance testing, checking IP ratings, and inspecting cable glands, terminations and earthing arrangements in line with BS 7671.

A Green Electrical Services provides neat, tidy and well-organised fault-finding and remedial work across High Peak, Buxton, Glossop, New Mills, Macclesfield and Stockport.

Could your property need rewiring? ⚡

Some warning signs to look out for include:
• Flickering or dimming lights
• Warm, discoloured or cracked switches and sockets
• Frequently blown fuses or tripping circuit breakers
• Old rubber or lead-sheathed cables
• No visible earthing
• A dated consumer unit with rewirable fuses
• A burning smell from electrical fittings

These signs do not always mean a full rewire is required, but they should never be ignored. If you notice a burning smell, switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and seek urgent professional advice.

A qualified electrician can inspect the installation and recommend the right solution for your home or rental property.

A Green Electrical Services provides professional rewiring and consumer unit upgrades for homes across Northwest England, with neat, tidy and well-organised installations using quality materials.
