Holgate Depot Feasibility Study

Hexagon Design Consultants was appointed by Cairn Cross Civil Engineering, on behalf of Network Rail, to undertake a feasibility study for a proposed new maintenance facility at Holgate Depot.

The project included the assessment and design of an under-floor wheel lathe, bogie drop, wash-down facilities, welfare accommodation, and associated access infrastructure. Our multidisciplinary team completed a range of surveys and assessments, including ground investigations, ecological and flood risk assessments, utilities reviews, and a 3D point cloud survey.

Alongside developing foundation layouts, drainage strategies, permanent way assessments, and electrical power calculations, we also produced a detailed 3D visualisation and fly-through to help stakeholders clearly understand the proposed development and its integration within the existing depot environment.

A fantastic example of collaborative engineering and innovative design supporting the future of rail infrastructure.

Case Study Spotlight: Hull Botanic Gardens Superstructure

🚆 Transforming rail depot infrastructure for the future

We're shining a spotlight on our work at Northern Rail's Hull Botanic Gardens maintenance depot, where Hexagon delivered a comprehensive design solution to support major infrastructure upgrades and structural enhancements.

Working alongside Cairn Cross, our team undertook detailed surveys, structural assessments, and design development to facilitate the replacement of a life-expired shed roof while keeping depot operations running with minimal disruption. The project also upgraded servicing capabilities to accommodate new rolling stock, including Class 170 and Class 155 vehicles.

Key elements of the project included: ✅ Bespoke steel exoskeleton design
✅ New stabling road for 3-car Class 170 units
✅ Roof access equipment and jacking systems
✅ Fuelling, CET, tanking and AdBlue facilities with weather protection canopies
✅ Reinforced concrete foundations for a 12-tonne jib crane
✅ Mechanical, electrical, drainage and lighting upgrades integrated into the existing depot infrastructure

This project demonstrates Hexagon's expertise in delivering complex rail infrastructure and depot design solutions that improve operational efficiency, safety, and long-term asset performance.
