What’s the biggest risk to your proposed Solar PV installation? - Connection to the grid. As Solar PV, Batteries & inverters get larger the connection to the grid becomes an increasingly more prominent point in many installations.
After a customer accepts a quote it’s the first thing we do.
Known as the G99 application it’s where we apply to the DNO (District Network Operator) on your behalf to ensure the proposed amount of generation is safe to connect to the grid without causing issue to the stability to local network. Many particular larger installations will come back with some sort of limitation on the inverter size (known as intrinsic capacity) and or the amount power that can sent back to the grid at any one time (known as export limitation/G100)
In addition to this it can also attract fees from the DNO, particularly for larger installations where they have assessment & design work to do on their end.
As was the case with this project. Originally proposed was a single 10kW inverter with 27x 540w panels but we got knocked back to maximum 7kW with a 3.0kW export limit a safe maximum of 19 Modules plus a £400 fee to boot. Ouch! a real blow to the project.
However when you employ professionals who know and fully understand these rules you know what can be proposed and under a different category we were able to propose 2x3.68kW inverters meaning an intrinsic capacity of 7.32kW an increased export limitation of 3.68kW it also meant we were able to safely install 24x 540w Panels across the 2 inverters and no fee!
And what a cracking job the team has made of it! Shout out to PMB Landscapes for their part with the ground works, like we were never there!
